Project Officer – Low Carbon Regions

Salary range £26,745 -£39,500 (up to 6 month secondment – open to Civil Service employees only)
Defra Higher Executive Officer/ Senior Executive Officer grade

Based in the Sustainable Development Commission’s offices in Cardiff

Since 2008 the Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) in Wales has been working with the Welsh Assembly Government Wales Spatial Plan Team to develop a framework and priority actions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions at a regional level. As a result of significant research and stakeholder engagement, SDC produced a report Low Carbon Wales: Regional Priorities for Action which provides stakeholders with the information needed to develop plans for reducing carbon emissions. This report has had a very positive response by Ministers and stakeholders within the Wales Spatial Plan regions.

The SDC in Wales has recently been commissioned by the Welsh Assembly Government Wales Spatial Plan Team to help them build the capacity to enable the delivery of the recommendations in the Low Carbon Wales report. This will involve:

Reporting to the Senior Project Manager, the Project Officer (Higher Executive Officer /Senior Executive Officer grade) will support the Welsh team’s work in the delivery of the Low Carbon Regions initiative.

The Project Officer role will involve working collaboratively with the WSP teams across Wales, with a specific focus on North and Central Wales. It will involve significant engagement with stakeholders across all sectors in order to identify how they can collaborate to reduce emissions in their regions.

The WSP provides an important conduit between the local and national level and therefore the Project Officer will identify and report back to the Welsh Assembly Government on gaps, opportunities, barriers, successes and policy advice. Conversely, the Project Officer will work with the SDC team to establish a regional approach to national carbon reduction initiatives and will also draw upon the significant expertise and resource that SDC has built up UK wide.
