BACKGROUND
ORGANISATIONAL BACKGROUND
TRAFFIC is the leading non-governmental organization working globally on trade in wild animals and plants in the context of both biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

TRAFFIC International is a charity and limited company registered in the UK. TRAFFIC’s head office, based in Cambridge UK, provides worldwide leadership, coordination, cross-regional and corporate functions. TRAFFIC’s local engagement is managed through programme offices operating under the auspices of the UK charity, with staff based in a hub office and at other strategic locations where necessary. Programme offices operate within a geographic area of responsibility focused on one or multiple countries where TRAFFIC aims to help deliver priority programme outcomes. TRAFFIC works in strategic alliance with IUCN and WWF on wildlife trade issues.


PROJECT BACKGROUND
TRAFFIC has been chosen by the US Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) to implement a project in Ecuador, and Colombia, and additional airports in key countries later in the projects (e.g. Mexico, Brazil, tbd.). The project will build on TRAFFIC’s expertise in wildlife trade issues and its previous successes in supporting the aviation sector to strengthen their practices against wildlife trafficking through the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Reducing Opportunities for Unlawful Transport of Endangered Species (ROUTES) Partnership.

The salary range for this role is USD 27,000 - 33,000 per year dependent on skills and experience.
JOB DESCRIPTION
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES
The successful candidate will carry out technical and logistical project work and coordinate the planning, communication, and implementation of programmatic activities. The Project Officer will work closely with the INL Project Leader Latin America, other TRAFFIC staff, and IUCN partners to ensure that the project team operates effectively on time and according to the donor’s requirements.

SPECIFIC DUTIES
• Responsible for engagement with partners and other agencies, as relevant, to support the delivery of recommendations to, and commitments of stakeholders involved in auto detection and IWT reporting app within the aviation sector;
• Coordinates the planning, communication, and implementation of programmatic activities for TRAFFIC under the INL funded Strengthening Collaboration to Interdict Illegal Wildlife Trade at Key Airports in Latin America
• Communicates the work and results to interested institutions including the TRAFFIC Network, partners, and donors, and identifies opportunities for collaboration;
• Responsible for engagement with private sector and government partners leading on the development of technology for wildlife detection and reporting;
• Coordination and communication between relevant stakeholders working towards the development of wildlife detection technology;
• Responsible for liaising with TRAFFIC’s Project Steering Group for the wildlife detection technology application project, including developing and updating project documents as required;
• Responsible for liaising with TRAFFIC’s Informal Working Group on Auto Detection of Wildlife in Air Transport;
• Contributes to the development, review and quality control of INL project material, including reviewing outputs and reports;
• Work directly with field project personnel, donors, consultants and others to facilitate coordination, communication and regular reporting of activities;
• Convene, facilitate and report back on calls, meetings and workshops (virtual and in-person) as required.
• Contribute to the identification of, and engagement with other initiatives that can support the sustainability of the INL project;
• Support the identification of synergies with existing and/or future opportunities within TRAFFIC offices from the outputs of this project;
REQUIREMENTS
  • A University Degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. environmental science, policy, business management, corporate responsibility) or related field;
• Strong interpersonal skills, including experience working with high level partners, as well as navigating multiple teams with competing priorities;
• A minimum of three years of professional work experience relevant to nature conservation and/or illegal wildlife trade and transnational organised crime; or, have experience or evidence of a strong interest working in a conservation environment;
• Experience with or knowledge of applying artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to conservation would be advantageous;
• Demonstrated experienced in stakeholder management and coordination, preferably with private sector and government;
• Experience in navigating complex organizational and partnership structures;
• Excellent communication and presentation skills;
• Excellent time keeping, reporting and coordination skills;
• Ability to work with remote teams and across time zones;
• Fluency and excellent writing skills in Spanish and English essential;
• Relevant experience working in Ecuador and/or Colombia is an advantage
