Description

This position is to lead the implementation of a pulp and paper project in Vietnam, with the potential for engagement in a series of domestic and regional projects to bring about impactful change for people and the planet.

The successful candidate will have a background in forestry or natural resource management with professional experience in forest management, responsible sourcing, sustainability or development. The individual shall be able to demonstrate their passion for social and environmental issues and be highly motivated to tackle complex sustainability issues in the forestry sector in Vietnam. In return, the position offers the opportunity to be immersed within a rich and diverse set of cultures in the region to co-create solutions with partners that support the social and environmental context for responsible business. This is an ideal position for a forester keen to build a career in international forestry or sustainability in Asia-Pacific, working alongside business to drive innovation towards best practice forest management and timber sourcing.

Key role

• Provide leadership to a small team working to implement the responsible sourcing policy of a major pulp and paper company in Asia
• Manage and ensure the delivery of project outcomes for TFT in Vietnam
• Support the ongoing capacity building and development of the local team
• Support the exploration and development of innovative fields of work that can grow TFTs impact around responsible production
• Coordinate and provide technical support to TFT members related to projects in Vietnam
• Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of the issues associated with the legality and responsibility of timber production in Vietnam, and actively apply this knowledge toward strategic decision making
• Collaborate with regional teams in China and Malaysia on project delivery and business development
• Manage the reporting, planning and communications required for project that the position shall lead
• Must have an active and ongoing knowledge of the technical application of available standards for forest management certification including FSC and PEFC
• The candidate should thrive in both corporate and field settings, with the capacity to engage with senior leadership of large corporations and conduct field assessments to plantations and factories

Responsibilities

• Engage and coordinate with members, partners, stakeholders and field teams. TFT works with a wide range of Members
• Implement strategic work plans that advance the availability of responsibly sourced products with an emphasis in pulp and paper supply chains
• Assess forest management practices and traceability systems for pulp and pulpwood supply chains and identify best practice measures.
• Manage and oversee delivery of project outcomes, reporting and communication
• Be part of a motivated and innovative team applying their passion towards practical solutions that tackle complex challenges at the forefront of sustainable pulp and paper production in Vietnam

Requirements

• Bachelor degree or higher level qualification in forestry, natural resource management, supply chain management or related field
• A minimum of five years working in or with businesses, ideally in forestry or natural resource management, supply chain management or responsible procurement
• Good understanding and strong interest in environmental and social responsibility issues
• Strong strategic, management and coordination skills
• Ability to work within a multidisciplinary and multicultural team
• Willingness and ability to travel nationally and internationally
• Able to handle multiple tasks and work autonomously
• Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills with fluency in English (Vietnamese highly desired)

Preferred

• Strong understanding of forest management and pulpwood production, chain of custody and up-to-date comprehension of corporate sustainability commitments
• Knowledge of wood products and/or agro commodity supply chains
• Experience in forestry or business development
