Project Manager, South Selkirk Natural Area - Nelson, British Columbia

Purpose and General Description:

The Project Manager will be responsible for the delivery of conservation actions and land management obligations in the South Selkirk Natural Conservation Area. The Project Manager delivers “on-the-ground” management of all properties, with a focus on the Darkwoods Conservation Area.  The incumbent will implement Property Management Plans for all projects in the South Selkirk in concert with partner organizations.

Specific tasks will include managing access, implementing stewardship actions, manage forestry activities at Darkwoods, assisting with donor tours, and other tasks as directed by the Program Director.  The incumbent will work closely with the Canadian Rocky Mountain’s Program Director and Stewardship Coordinator and will collaborate with other NCC staff and departments, regionally and nationally, when appropriate.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Access Management on all South Selkirk properties

  • Manage access including signage, gates, and permits
  • Foster positive relations with user groups, public, and government organizations.
  • Provide safety training to staff/contractors/researchers

2. Annual Stewardship activities on all South Selkirk properties

  • Manage road maintenance and deactivation
  • Implement BMPs for  invasive species and coordinate with the Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Council
  • Manage the Tye community at Darkwoods
  • Other stewardship activities as required such as wetland enhancement, fencing, etc.

3. Forestry Management at Darkwoods

  • If required, identify harvest areas on Darkwoods using NCC’s biodiversity targets and SOPs to frame decision-making.
  • Coordinate and supervise contract logging operations
  • Communicate regularly with the BC Ministry of Forests during fire season
  • Represent NCC’s interest through the Private Managed Forests Lands Association
  • Manage all silviculture requirements

4. Donor Tours

  • Assist as required with donor tours, including logistical arrangements and guiding

5. Administration

  • Work with finance department to develop and supervise contracts for all field work
  • Complete annual returns to the PMFLC and Harvest Returns to the BC Assessment Authority

6. Other

  • Maintain Darkwoods office and grounds
  • Maintain relationships with surrounding landowners and community groups
  • Other duties as assigned by the Canadian Rocky Mountains Program Director

Required Skills and Attributes:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in forestry, ecology, conservation biology or related discipline with 3-5 years of directly related experience
  • Ability to work with limited administrative support
  • Background in forestry, including harvesting and silviculture
  • Strong understanding of road maintenance and deactivation
  • Flexibility, reliability, self-motivation, and ability to work independently as a leader
  • Comfortable working in a team setting and capable of easily communicating with a wide range of people from the public and private sectors
  • Experience in delivering land/resource management programs in a rural community
  • Project management skills, including excellent problem solving, planning and organizational skills, and attention to detail and timelines
  • Demonstrated ability to manage staff and/or contractors
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite
  • Entrepreneurial, with a strong ability to prepare and manage timelines, goals and expectations wisely
  • Must be prepared to travel and work flexible hours at times
  • Committed to the core values and mission statement of NCC
