Description |
The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is seeking a Project Manager who will be responsible for establishing a new conservation programme in Sri Lanka’s biodiversity-rich Wet Zone. The programme will focus on the endemic red slender loris (Loris tardigradus), a nocturnal primate classified as Endangered on the 2007 IUCN Red List. The slender loris has been identified as a high priority for conservation attention in ZSL’s EDGE of Existence programme, and funding has recently been secured to establish an 18th month project to collect data crucial to the development of a conservation action plan for the species. Subsequent funding for implementing the recommended actions will be dependent on the success of this initial phase. The Project Manager will be responsible developing a strong project that will pave the way for longer-term conservation action in the region. Key responsibilities include managing project field staff; liaising with local partners from universities, research institutes, local and international NGOs; overseeing in-country expenditure and research outputs; producing regular progress and technical reports; and organising an Action Planning workshop and creation of subsequent Conservation Action Plan. Candidates should have a PhD in a relevant subject or equivalent experience, a strong research background and a proven track record in managing large-scale field projects in tropical forest habitats. They should be able to work independently in demanding field conditions, and have an aptitude both for managing field teams and for fostering relationships with institutional partners. Excellent written/oral communication and presentation skills are essential. Experience of working in Sri Lanka plus a working knowledge of GIS and tropical forest ecology would also be advantageous.
The post-holder will have a fixed term ZSL contract for 12 months, renewable until at least September 2009, and be based primarily in Sri Lanka. Return flights from Europe to Sri Lanka, visa and insurance under ZSL’s group travel insurance policy will be provided. The post is available immediately.
Further details of the project can be obtained on the Slender Loris Conservation page of the EDGE of Existence website (http://www.edgeofexistence.org/conservation/slender_loris.php) and further details on the post, if required, from Carly Waterman (carly.waterman@zsl.org). Applicants should send their CV and a covering letter, detailing relevant experience and skills and including a possible start date, by email to hr@zsl.org. |
