Directory Entry : Founded in 1967 as the Environmental Defense Fund, we tackle the most serious environmental problem...a scrappy group of scientists and a lawyer on Long Island, New York, fighting to save osprey from the toxic pesticide DDT. Using scientific evidence, our founders got DDT banned nationwide. Today, we’re one of the world's leading environmental organizations. In the U.S., Fortune magazine called our board one of the country's most influential nonprofit boards. You can see the jobs of the EDF on their website.

With world attention focused on both the environment and the economy, Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) is where policymakers and business leaders turn for win-win solutions. This leading green group, with programs from Boston to Beijing, has tripled in size over the past decade by focusing on strong science, uncommon partnerships and market-based approaches. You can be part of a vibrant workplace that welcomes diverse perspectives, talents and contributions, where innovation and a focus on results are a way of life.

The Conservation Leadership Council (CLC), launched in 2011, is a partnership between EDF and visionary leaders from the highest levels of government, business and advocacy organizations to reinvigorate conservative leadership on the environment. The CLC solicits and publishes new policy ideas from conservative thought leaders, holds public policy roundtables to debate and advance conservative approaches to conservation and the environment, and advocates for solutions-oriented engagement by conservative policymakers in the most important environmental challenges of our time.

Overall Function

The Project Manager will play a critical role in the execution of day-to-day operations of the CLC and long-term project planning. The incumbent will develop recommendations and action steps using advanced knowledge gleaned from previous experience, key stakeholders, and EDF staff. Project outcomes must be practically and technically sound from a business and operational perspective, and yet aggressively address environmental concerns. The Project Manager’s role is three-fold: (1) to be the team lead in working with EDF staff, Council members, and partner organizations to develop and execute strategies to advance the CLC’s goals, (2) to coordinate and manage cross-cutting teams, both internal and external, in support of the CLC’s public events, internal and external communications, publications, and website, and (3) help establish metrics for success of the project and communicate progress toward project goals internally and externally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the CLC’s success by facilitating strong communication among CLC members, project teams, and stakeholders. This includes articulating project goals and keeping the team in sync on progress and desired results.
  • Develop and apply appropriate means for measuring success.
  • Play an integral role in other activities including fundraising, evaluating and recommending new project ideas; disseminating and communicating project results; and being a team player in the development of a vibrant and entrepreneurial program.
  • Develop and manage relationships with key external stakeholders, subject matter experts, and relevant academic/research communities to generate actions related to project. Coordinate the work of other partner organizations as needed.
  • Develop, launch and evaluate the outcomes of the project to engage academic and other subject matter experts and encourage action/advocacy.
  • Support the CLC and project teams in maintenance of website content and social and traditional media outreach.
  • Represent EDF at meetings with CLC members and partner organizations as needed.
  • Communicate project results to Environmental Defense Fund staff, partners, and other stakeholders through reports, presentations, and other methods.

Qualifications

  • At least four or more years of related experience, or advanced degree in a related field with at least two years’ related experience
  • Experience in project management and exceptional personal organization and attention to detail;
  • An ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, both independently and as a member of small teams in a dynamic and creative environment;
  • Strong analytical skills and experience performing rigorous analysis in support of highly visible work;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work with colleagues and partners of varied backgrounds and experience;
  • Ability to juggle many tasks and deadlines and to respond quickly to changing opportunities.
  • A broad understanding of environmental issues and demonstrated ability to collaborate with diverse scientists and industrial stakeholders in large-scale, multi-initiative studies.
