Position Summary
The Project Manager assists in the planning and implementation of a major new project in Maine on climate change adaptation with national implications. With a $750,000 three-year grant from the Kresge Foundation, this project will build climate change resiliency into ecosystem services, such as clean water, food production, clean air, wood, flood control, space for recreation, and wildlife. We are working with four major sectors: forestry, agriculture, rural residential development, and conservation lands, and at two spatial scales: the landowner scale and the landscape scale. This project will be recognized as a source for leadership in climate change adaptation in the U.S. for rural land use sectors. Working with stakeholders in Maine, the Project Manager develops and implements practical adaptation strategies to help these sectors and landscapes become more resilient to climate change. The position reports to the Senior Program Leader for Climate Change & Energy.
The position is located at Manomet’s headquarters on the bluffs overlooking beautiful Cape Cod Bay, in Plymouth, MA, 45 miles south of Boston.

About Manomet’s Climate Change Initiative
Our Climate Change & Energy Initiative focuses on adaptation and mitigation strategies for human communities and wildlife habitats, as well as integrating energy infrastructure with wildlife conservation. Manomet’s Climate Change & Energy Initiative is at the forefront of developing science-based adaptation solutions to climate change in the Northeast. We are working with state and federal agencies, foundations, landowners, and NGOs to identify and implement robust approaches that will help us conserve threatened resources.
Essential Functions
- The Project Manager is primarily responsible for development of climate change adaptation plans and associated GIS-based analytic mapping for the landscape and landowner scale sites in Massachusetts and Maine. Additionally, the Project Manager assists in growing a program in climate change adaptation and mitigation at Manomet. Specific responsibilities include:
- Research and data compilation for each of the climate change adaptation sites.
- Evaluate previous plans, ecological data, ecosystem services provided by the sites, climate trends, climate projections and related information to assist Manomet staff in the development of recommended adaptation actions,
- Use GIS to develop thematic and analytic maps of the adaptation sites,
- Develop climate change adaptation plans for each of the sites in partnership with the Senior Program Leader for Climate Change and the Program Manager.
- Analyze relevant climate change trends and projections.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of a standardized process for creating climate change adaptation plans based on economic and technical viability and the achievement of multiple benefits.
- Assist in the organization and execution of meetings, workshops and conferences in association with adaptation projects.
- Meet all project milestones and deliverables of project funders on time and with high standard of quality.
- Assist in the preparation of funding proposals for the Climate Change Adaptation program.
QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum education, experience, skills required to perform the job)
- Five years of related experience preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, conservation, forest ecology, environmental planning or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Proven ability to translate science into actionable plans.
- Strong working knowledge of climate change as it pertains to the Northeastern U.S.
- Strong working knowledge of the role of hydrology in natural resource management.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong computer skills and demonstrated GIS abilities.
- Strong analytical skills.
