Description

Green America is a national nonprofit organization that mobilizes consumers, investors, and businesses to use their economic power to create an environmentally sustainable and socially just society.

We create change in the world with three strategic hubs: 1) Consumer Action (demand-side campaigns with individuals), 2) Green Business Network (growing the innovative green business sector), and 3) our new Center for Sustainability Solutions (supply-side transformation with corporate partners).  We organize our national network of 250,000+ consumer activists, 2,000 Green Business Network members, and our growing list of large corporate partners around four core issue areas: 1) Safe Food, 2) Clean Energy, 3) Fair Labor, and 4) Responsible Finance.

Part of Green America’s funding for our work comes from the business sector – from small, green businesses placing ads in our publications to large companies that meet our corporate contributions policy providing key support for our programs and campaigns.  We seek a Business Development Manager who has experience developing partnerships with businesses and soliciting them for program sponsorship packages, philanthropic gifts or grants, advertising and product promotion (digital and print), and other revenue-generating partnerships.  A sampling of our current business supporters include: Clif Bar, Ben & Jerry’s, Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, Nutiva, Crofter’s Organic, and Coconut Bliss.

This person will be responsible for helping Green America transition our traditional advertising-focused business revenue stream to more robust corporate sponsorships and partnerships. This transition has been happening for many years, with new sponsorships ranging from $9,000 - $50,000.  This new revenue stream has great potential to increase funding for our work and enhance our impact in the world, and now we are looking for the right person to help us further develop and expand this revenue area.  This is a new position at Green America that will build on the work of several long-time staffers.

Business Development Manager’s responsibilities:

  • Manage existing, and grow new business partnerships for Green America’s programs in the areas of safe food, clean energy, fair labor, responsible finance, green business, and our People & Planet Award. The existing portfolio is $200,000 in sponsorships and advertising in our Green American magazine, Guide to Socially Responsible Investing, National Green Pages, and digital products. This portfolio can be renewed and grown in its current advertising and sponsorship form, and/or as part of new partnership packages developed by the Business Development Manager to attract new partners and further increase revenues.  The goal will be to increase revenues from our business advertising, sponsorships, and partnerships by at least 30% in the first 18-24 months.
  • Work with the Center for Sustainability Solutions team to develop business partnerships with major corporations on the supply side of our work, and hybrid proposals for support of both our consumer and supply side programs.
  • Working with the Development, Programs, and Communications teams, develop new sponsorship packages, identify projects in need of support, develop new digital and other promotional benefits, and ensure the fulfillment of existing partnerships.
  • Build new relationships with prospective corporate and business supporters, identifying their needs and issues important to them and determining how we can work together to meet our respective goals.
  • Take over the management and stewardship of existing business relationships.
  • Write and present proposals for support to business prospects.
  • Attend events to meet prospective business supporters and promote Green America’s work (Natural Products Expo East & West, Green Festivals, conferences, etc.).
  • Evaluate the possibility of new royalty/affinity partnerships with businesses, and solicit for them when appropriate.
  • Develop deep knowledge of Green America’s program work.

The ideal candidate has:

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree.
  • At least 5 years of proven corporate/business sales and/or fundraising experience.
  • Enthusiasm and skillset for building new corporate partnership opportunities.
  • Willingness and ability to travel locally and nationally 10-20% of time.
  • Exemplary communications skills, interpersonal skills, professionalism, and ability to build long-term relationships with key funders and stakeholders.
  • Strong project management skills with ability to meet financial goals.
  • Strong writing skills and experience writing compelling fundraising proposals, sponsorship agreements, and reports.
  • Understanding of the evolving landscape of digital promotional products, and the ability to interpret online analytics.
  • Demonstrated ability with donor databases to manage and track fundraising efforts (Green America uses Raiser’s Edge).
  • Research and prospecting skills, and the ability to effectively identify and prioritize prospective business supporters.
  • Entrepreneurial, results-oriented focus, with demonstrated ability to work through and solve problems independently in order to move projects from inception to completion.
  • Ability to obtain a deep understanding of Green America’s core program areas and projects (safe food, clean energy, fair labor, responsible finance, and green business), and communicate this understanding to supporters and donors.
  • Strong intrinsic interest in issues directly related to Green America’s mission.
