Description

Borrego Solar Systems seeks an experienced Project Manager (PM) to join our growing energy storage division. The PM will report to the division’s Director of Technology and Operations to deliver on the operational commitments of our energy storage projects with large commercial and utility clients, manage client and project expectations, and institute rigorous controls for complex, dynamic projects. The company has ambitious plans to be a market leader in energy storage, and our team’s ability to successfully deliver projects in this rapidly growing and maturing market is critical to Borrego Solar’s mission to solve the world’s energy problems by accelerating the adoption of renewable energy.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional with a proven history of successfully delivering distributed generation projects on a commercial or utility scale, the ability to manage complex projects with limited direction, and the desire to take on a variety of energy storage projects with diverse client types.

Teamwork, integrity, a passion for sustainable energy and for generating change is what drives our company’s success. We are seeking highly articulate, motivated, well organized individuals with a focus on continuous improvement to exceed expectations.

About the position: This position is our division’s first operational hire, and will be responsible for the successful delivery of our first energy storage systems. The primary function of the role is to manage owner and project expectations and controls, report internally and externally to appropriate stakeholders, manage project teams and oversee project progress through all phases of energy storage projects. Comfort with a variety of client types will be critical, as our projects range from utility-scale solar and storage facilities in Massachusetts and New York to behind-the-meter commercial energy storage systems in California.

The successful PM will bring a breadth of experience delivering different project types to establish processes and standard operating procedures that our division will employ as we grow. At the same time, the successful PM must be a creative problem-solver, bringing a foundation of experience to tackle design and construction challenges as we respond to project requirements in a rapidly maturing industry. Most importantly, the successful applicant will be enthusiastic about joining a small, independent team with ambitious plans for growth, and will be someone with a sense of humor who is a joy to work with, at least most of the time.

This position is based in Boston, MA and may require significant periods of travel to projects in California, New York, and Massachusetts.

Key Responsibilities:
• Set and deliver on installation goals for energy storage projects ranging from $100,000 to $5,000,000
• Maintain project schedules, develop project timelines, and manage people and materials to complete jobs on schedule and within budget guidelines.
• Coordinate with Borrego Solar project managers to seamlessly integrate energy storage into solar photovoltaic design-build projects
• Independently manage performance and productivity of installation subcontractors for energy storage projects

• Coordinate the construction of multiple projects simultaneously
• Attend and run weekly project management and design meetings
• Negotiate EPC agreements
• Qualify installation subcontractors for energy storage projects, and negotiate subcontract terms
• Develop and follow standard operating procedures for all aspects of project delivery
• Assist in the management and reporting of operational metrics to the GM of energy storage
• Adhere to Borrego Solar safety standards and installation best practices

Desired Qualifications:
• 5+ years electrical construction and project management experience; solar photovoltaic and energy storage experience preferred
• Understanding of engineering principles related to distributed energy resources and electrical design
• Experience with design/build contracts that result in profitable construction projects
• Demonstrated ability to make value engineering decisions to improve ROI for the client
• Demonstrated ability to manage diverse details from construction means and methods to contract language and legal protection (ex: bolt size and type to indemnification and payment terms)
• Experience making day-to-day decisions at construction site
• Experience creating and managing schedule and budget to required margins
• Experience managing subcontractors and leading subcontractor hiring process to maintain quality, safety, and cost-efficiency goals
• Experience negotiating contracts and mediating disputes
• Proficiency with budgeting cash flow and ability to understand financial models
• High level of experience managing vendor and client payments to achieve positive cash flow
• Experience serving utility, large commercial, and institutional clients
• Experience with electrical wiring in commercial applications
