Description

The EEA is seeking to recruit an experienced expert in the biodiversity area to help on cooperation matters with a number of European and international bodies that cover data gathering, information exchange, indicators and assessments and knowledge management within policy-science interfaces. The work will be conducted within the EEA management framework, and at the EEA Biodiversity group and connecting to the European Topic Center for Biological Diversity. Both the group and the ETC  hold the maintenance of priority datasets, secure broad data management within the SEIS Data Centre for biodiversity, produce and manage  information structured in dedicated systems (BISE, CHM-BD), indicators (e.g. SEBI) and assessments (e.g. Baseline). As data supplier and receptor EEA cooperates with many European and international partners to this effect (European Commission, member countries, UNEP-WCMC, MA, Council of Europe, GBIF, IPBES, CBD, etc.).

Particular focus will be, on the one hand on partnering for securing information provisions with regard to the European delivery to CBD indicator activities (links with SEBI), consolidating EEA participation and visibility in relevant global and sub-global initiatives (MA follow up, IPBES) and others more research and sector oriented  (e.g. FP7 or similar types of activities; agriculture and forests); and, on the other hand, on contributing to interlinkages between biodiversity and other strategic themes and topics (e.g. marine, climate change, regional development and food security) in the context of biodiversity-related analysis and assessments. The successful candidate is highly professional, creative and motivated by environmental matters at large, has very good technical skills on biodiversity information and knowledge processes, analytical competences and good abilities to network and conduct cooperation activities.

Under the responsibility of the Head of the Biodiversity Group, reporting to the Head of Natural Systems and Vulnerability Programme, the project manager will work on the following tasks:

  • Actively follow-up a number of global, sub-global, European, EU and regional networks contributing to the role of EEA in relation to the implementation of Global and EU policies in the area of Biodiversity;
  • Coordinate this networking activity across EEA and with the ETC-BD, through the coordination of inputs from the Biodiversity Group into different activities and projects internally (sector and thematic report; SOER2015; Eye-on-Earth activities) and linking to EU and European already established processes (the EU Implementation framework in the context of the EU Biodiversity Strategy, pre-accession and neighbourhood policies, development policies and towards the Council of Europe);
  • In this respect prepare and revise papers, positions and other documents interlinking with other colleagues in the Biodiversity group, across NSV groups and across EEA programmes;
  • Secure the updating of EEA related biodiversity webpages liaising with the data and information handlers and linking to the Communication Group;
  • Support the biodiversity indicators Project manager in a SEBI 2020 horizon, by strategically defining the process, supporting its development, gathering data and information to produce the indicators and promote the outreach to other communities and users;
  • Support broader outreach activities by harvesting diverse contributions and projects across EEA into the Biodiversity Information System for Europe (BISE) within the Common Implementation Framework being set for the EU Biodiversity Strategy and reaching out to broader ecosystem assessment communities and networks;
  • Support the strategic thinking of the Biodiversity and Ecosystems area for the next EEA strategic cycle 2014-2018.
