Description
Project Manager is required for our primate release programme in Zambia. Established in 2002, the project has to date released over 250 yellow baboons and vervet monkeys back to the wild in Lunga Luswishi Game Management Area, Northern Kafue.  Many of the primates are orphans of the bushmeat trade and have been confiscated from illegal pet owners in Zambia. They have to undergo a process of rehabilitation and integration at a wildlife sanctuary in Lusaka into stable family units until ready for their return back to the wild.

The project, which is funded primarily by the Born Free Foundation, is seeking an independent, self-motivated, enthusiastic manager to develop this exciting project still further. Alongside his/her Zambian counterparts, the manager will be required to take overall responsibility for managing the project’s operations in Zambia. This involves: supervising and training field staff; co-ordinating rescues; managing the project’s partnership with the primate rehab facility in Lusaka; co-ordinating preparations (and conducting predator avoidance training) for the primates’ return to the wild; conducting ‘soft’ releases; monitoring the released groups using radio tracking equipment; conducting focal research; co-ordinating anti-poaching patrols using Zambia Wildlife Authority scouts; producing regular reports on activity; managing project budgets; and co-ordinating the logistical support needed for the efficient running of the project.

Experience of working in Africa/Asia on comparable wildlife projects is essential, as is a sound background in scientific field research, managing staff and project management. Off-road driving experience is also desired, as is the ability to operate in a remote, bush location.

The start date for the position is ASAP. A stipend of US$200/month will be provided, as well as all in-country travel, tented field accommodation and food.
