Description

The European Forest Institute (EFI) is an international organisation established by European States. One of
EFI’s main aims is to be an acknowledged contact point for researchers, decision-makers and the public
seeking unbiased and policy-relevant information on European forests and forestry. The Observatory for
European Forests (OEF), being embedded in the EFI Regional Office EFICENT-OEF, supports particularly this
work by establishing a research-related, demand-driven and policy-oriented forest information platform. Its
main objective is to foster the linkages between information processes and policy decision making
processes at national and pan-European level.

The position of project leader ‘Implementing Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management
in Europe (C&I for SFM)’ is now open.

The post requires:
? strong project management skills for conducting the project
? in-depth knowledge on Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management
? experience in coordinating input from external experts/expert networks to the project
? experience in implementation of events and publications

The project will review achievements of the pan-European Criteria and Indicators (C&I) for Sustainable
Forest Management (SFM), and how they have been implemented at the European, national and local
levels and by other sectors.  It will identify challenges and develop recommendations for improving the C&I
set and their further development and implementation in an evolving international environment.  
Deliverables are a state of the art report, a set of standard national implementation reports, subregional/national workshops and a European workshop. The main outcome is a summary report, including
recommendations to the implementing countries and the C&I process. The project will conducted in close
cooperation with FOREST EUROPE Liaison Unit, the UNECE/FAO and other relevant organizations/experts.

The applicant should have a PhD (or equivalent). He/she should have as a minimum 4 years of working
experience, preferably from a post-doc position and knowledge in the following fields:
? solid understanding of national and European forest policy processes;
? in-depth insight and work experience on criteria and indicators of sustainable forest management
at both national and European level;
? good knowledge of indicator processes/activities relating to forests and the forestry sector
? extensive skills in synthesizing outcomes and providing solid recommendations to research and
policy

Further to the above the candidate should have the ability to work and communicate with a broad variety
of different stakeholders, researchers and policy makers at the national, European and international scale.
Fluency in English is required, French and/or German language is an asset. The candidate should have
strong management and communication skills and show a track record of working in an international working environment. He/she should demonstrate experience in working both independently and leading a
team (on site as well as in distributed locations).

Duty station and travel

The Project Leader will be based  at the Observatory for European Forests (OEF) in Nancy, France with
regular visits to EFICENT-OEF office located in Freiburg, Germany as well as other project related travels.
The OEF Office is situated in the city center of Nancy. The city itself is located in the heart of the Lorraine
region about  1,5 hours from Paris by high speed TGV train. With its 350,000 inhabitants, Nancy is a major
academic and research centre, well known for its education and research in forestry and environmental
sciences. Nancy, with its historic city centre provides for an attractive place to live  and through its services
caters for a high standard of living.

Employment conditions

The Project Leader will be an EFI staff member. The successful candidate will be expected to take up the
post as soon as is reasonably practical. The duration of employment will be 2.5 years based on the given
project duration. Extensions may be possible based on any project follow up activities.
