Description

The Student Conservation Association (SCA), a national force of conservation volunteers is seeking an experienced conservation leader to supervise a team of 4 corps members for 8 months who will be responsible for implementing green storm water best management practices (BMPs) in the Marquette Park Lagoon in Indiana. The Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority (RDA) will partner with the City of Gary/Gary Storm water Management District and Student Conservation Association (SCA) to install BMP’s in the lagoon which has been impacted by sedimentation and nutrient runoff from storm water outflows originating in the Miller neighborhood of Gary, Indiana. In collaboration with community organizations, residents, the City of Gary, and SCA, the project will create jobs for unemployed residents in the area while reducing the impacts of nonpoint source pollution on the Marquette Park Lagoons. The BMP’s will include installing native rain gardens, bioswales and other conservation practices, and working with the neighboring community to install rain barrels at their residences.  The 241-acre Marquette Park is one of Northwest Indiana’s most admired and ecologically unique parks. Capital improvements, which are laid out in the MPLEMP, improve access to and circulation within the park, preserve and strengthen the park’s natural features, provide new recreational and educational amenities, and restore the park’s signature historic and natural facilities. Marquette Park is located at the southern tip of Lake Michigan and is the headwaters of the Grand Calumet River.
