The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is a leader in the U.S. Department of Energy’s effort to secure an energy future that is both environmentally and economically sustainable. Solar Market Project Leader position, responsible for managing projects that result in increasing the deployment of solar energy applications in the marketplace.

The Market Partnership & Tools Group in the Integrated Applications Center works to address market barriers to the deployment of renewables in the marketplace. This position will focus on market barriers to the deployment of solar applications, (especially utility-scale solar applications) including policy and regulatory issues, project issues such as siting, technical and economic risk, permitting, interconnection, and dealing with differing incentives and business models.

This includes assessment of market barriers, designing projects that address them, and executing those projects. The individual will be responsible for project management, work delivery and technical leadership of deployment projects. This may include projects to address policy best practices, technical and economic risks, utility business models, specific solar projects and project viability, installation, permitting, interconnection, workforce, or other market challenges. It includes developing stakeholder information, engaging and educating stakeholders, and convening working groups to make progress on key market issues.

The project leader:
• Has primary responsibility for managing multiple solar energy deployment projects.
• Works independently to carry out all aspects of projects including:
- Project scoping, resource planning and project management.
- Identifying and pursuing opportunities for systematic, replicable approaches to deploying solar energy technologies, or other ways to accelerate the deployment process.
- Identifying and pursuing market opportunities for policy, economic and/or technology assessments.
- Project budgets, monitoring, tracking, and reporting for a variety of clients.
• Prepares market-oriented publications and presentations intended to educate the industry and general public on best practices, methodologies, financial models, tools, and techniques. Presents work at conferences, workshops, and review meetings.
• Develops collaborations and pursues business development opportunities with other organizations, facilities, federal agencies, state, county, municipal, and tribal entities, as appropriate.
• Leads proposal reviews and proposal preparation to develop funding from EERE and other clients.
Represents the lab by providing unbiased information in potentially contentious situations.

The position requires:
- a knowledge of market players, policy best practices and issues, and the solar energy marketplace, particularly the Utility-Scale solar marketplace.
- demonstrated experience participating in project teams and carrying out project monitoring and reporting functions.
- demonstrated experience working with teams to solve challenging market-oriented problems
- knowledge of solar energy technologies and common project methodologies
Excellent organizational skills, communication and collaboration skills. Excellent Customer relations skills. The ability to deal with a wide variety of customers and stakeholders. Experience with common office and project management and analysis software.
Relevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Advanced understanding and application of project management principles, concepts, practices and standards. Advanced knowledge of technical field and related disciplines. Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts.

Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, teaming and communication skills.
Detailed knowledge of the solar energy marketplace, stakeholders, and barriers. Understanding of the Utility-scale solar marketplace and players.

Experience in collaborative problem-solving with industry players is a plus.

Experience with business development/strategic planning helpful. Working familiarity with other RE technologies (wind, biomass, geothermal, hydro, and efficient buildings) a plus.
This is a temporary position. Subsequent extensions may be available based upon the needs of the Lab. Temporary employees at NREL, with an initial assignment of 12 months or longer, are eligible for the following benefits during employment: Paid Time Off, Extended Sick Leave, Short-term Disability, Medical/Dental Insurance, 403(b) Savings Plan matching and Pension benefits based upon all other eligibility rules. Positions with initial assignments of 12 months or longer may be eligible for relocation benefits.
