About Us:

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

Overview:

This London-based position will oversee financial management for the ZSL East & Southeast Asia Programme, with a focus on several large projects in Indonesia, and possibly Thailand and Russia as required. One of the key projects is the UKCCU/NICFI-funded South Sumatra Partnership for Landscape Management Support Project. The post-holder will be integral in facilitating communications and coordinating the completion of financial tasks between ZSL offices in London and the Country Programme in Indonesia.

ZSL has been working in Indonesia since 2001, with over 40 staff and offices in Bogor and Jambi, with various field sites across the Sumatra. We have a suite of projects with the Sumatran tiger as the flagship species for our work. Projects include wildlife protection and conflict mitigation, protected area management, working with industry with a particular focus on sustainable production landscapes, and climate change and REDD+ development. ZSL works closely with the Ministry of Forestry and other key stakeholders to promote biodiversity conservation in Indonesia, by developing innovative, practical conservation tools and approaches, as well as supporting the improvement of governance and policy.

 
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Liaise on a day-to-day basis with the CP Asia team, CP Operations, ZSL Finance, and ZSL Indonesia to ensure that project accounts are up-to-date and recorded appropriately
  • Support the project managers in tracking project finances to ensure that deliverables are achieved and that budgets and project timeline and activities are aligned or updated accordingly
  • Lead the production of monthly or quarterly invoices (or as required) and confirms that appropriate documents are completed accordingly and linked with receipts, in compliance with donor requirements, including DFID
  • Coordinate with ZSL Finance and ZSL Operations for timely submission of invoices to donors and follow-up with payments
  • Maintain an accurate and up-to-date database of expenditures for the projects and relevant documents
  • Work with project manager(s) the post holder ensures that monthly financial reports are prepared for internal purposes and uploaded into the correct projects management program and ZSL Projects Database.
 
Person Specification:

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have a BA or BSc. in a relevant subject or equivalent qualification or relevent level of work experience.
  • Prior relevant financial management experience; accounting certification and QuickBooks experience are beneficial.
  • Advance knowledge of Microsoft software suite, particularly Excel.
  • Prior experience with building and maintaining databases.
  • A sound knowledge of relevant conservation issues in Indonesia/Asia.
  • A strong understanding of project financial management.
  • Familiarity with coordinating the financial aspects of projects and communications within multi-stakeholder projects, particularly DFID, UNDP and UNEP.
  • Well-developed skills in using software, particularly financial management software such as SUN and QuickBooks
  • Strong organisational, interpersonal, problem-solving, and communication skills, both written and in-person.
  • Proven ability to prioritize competing priorities and manage time effectively.
