Department: Law and Policy Programme (L&PP)
Qualification: An appropriate tertiary or postgraduate qualification in environmental law, biological sciences and/or conservation.
Experience Required:
- At least five year’s work experience in relevant discipline like environmental policy, environmental law, conservation, wildlife trade or natural resources management;
- Experience in facilitating training initiatives, developing training material as well as presenting training material;
- Experience working in the policy development arena and with wildlife trade issues;
- Experience working in the criminal justice system;
- Professional experience in wildlife conservation with the private sector and preferably a non-governmental organization (NGO); and
- Experience working with government, the corporate sector, civil society, and NGOs.
Competencies required:
- An in-depth understanding of the National Environmental Management Act, 107 of 1998, the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act, 10 of 2004, CITES and other national, international and provincial nature conservation laws, agreements and policies;
- A good understanding of, and practical experience with the Criminal Procedure Act, 51 of 1977, as well as practical experience in court proceedings and the criminal justice system;
- A good understanding of and experience in wildlife management, sustainable resource use as well as the conservation of and trade in biological resources;
- Strong oral and written communication skills in English and one other South African language;
- Strong skills in programme management, planning and project implementation;
- A willingness to travel widely and frequently and work under pressure;
- A self-driven individual with visionary ideas and the ability to implement them;
- Excellent networking, facilitating and communication skills; and
- The ability to engage and communicate with government officials, private landowners, managers of private reserves/parks and national reserves/parks, NGOs, South African Police Services, Interpol and other specialists.
Specific duties and responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a training and awareness raising strategy addressing needs identified with relevant stakeholder, to support the improvement of enforcement action and conviction rates;
- Develop and implement a strategy around EWT's role in assisting investigations involving poaching and wildlife trade in general;
- Support and assist with existing initiatives already being implemented/planned by the EWT aiming to contribute to the detection of wildlife contraban;
- Networking, public awareness and communication information gathering and sharing around specific trade issues.
