Project Engineering Manager - Biomass

Building on its successful track record in the wind sector, the RES Group is expanding its activities to non-wind renewable power generation.  A dedicated team within RES UK and Ireland leads the RES Group's activities in the development of grid-connected biomass power and CHP projects.  Two key projects with a combined capacity of 250 MW and a projected capital investment of c £600m are the current focus of the team's activities.

RES is looking to recruit a Project Engineering Manager to support the successful delivery of such projects.

Based in Kings Langley or Gateshead and reporting to the Project Procurement Contract Manager, the Project Engineering Manager will be responsible for coordinating the input of in-house and third party engineering to all stages of project.  The Project Engineering Manager will be responsible for ensuring engineering deliverables from the development, construction and commercial workstreams within the project closing team are met.

The job description below outlines the basic roles of the Project Engineering Manager. The list is not definitive or limited and other requirements may come to light as the project moves forward.

The Project Engineering Manager will:

  • ensure that all engineering is delivered to the highest technical standard and in accordance with RES safety, quality and environmental systems
  • work closely with the development, construction and commercial teams to develop, manage and deliver the programme for all pre-construction engineering
  • manage a small team of dedicated and other internal resources to deliver the pre-construction engineering programme
  • co-ordinate the input of specialists from within the RES Group Engineering team (e.g. grid connection, civil design, electrical design, project and SCADA engineering)
  • manage the performance of the third party Owner's Engineer
  • manage the tendering process for the selection and award of third party engineering contracts
  • manage the input from specialist third party engineers to programme and budget
  • work with RES group engineering to ensure consistency and quality of engineering input to the project
  • prepare monthly progress reports on the engineering programme
  • provide support to the project development and commercial teams through the due diligence process

The role - essential

The Project Engineering Manager will have:

  • previous relevant energy industry experience
  • experience of managing multi-disciplinary teams
  • excellent appreciation of solid fuel combustion and materials handling, preferably biomass specific
  • excellent project management and communication skills demonstrated by a track record in delivering to programme and budget
  • have excellent team working skills and will be comfortable leading a team
  • excellent understanding of UK Health and Safety and Construction Design and Management regulations

The role - desirable

  • be chartered in the field of mechanical, civil or process engineering
  • experience of the UK environmental permitting regulations and relevant European regulations governing thermal combustion in the UK
