Description

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To support the Project Development Team and Environment and Conservation Department in research, expertise and experience on sustainable livelihoods theory and lead on international best practice in this area
  • To support the Environment and Conservation team on a day to day basis on developing, maintaining, reviewing and tracking the activity plans for the project
  • To support the Environment and Conservation team to develop tools relating to participatory  approaches throughout the project
  • To be responsible for writing and maintaining the high standard of reports and evaluations submitted on behalf of Azafady for this project
  • Work alongside the Head of Environment and Conservation and Head of Finance in the monitoring and reporting of project budgets
  • To facilitate learning sessions and workshops on international best practice within the Project Development and Environment and Conservation teams, building their knowledge and capacity in these areas.
  • Work with Head of Environment and Conservation and project manager to ensure reporting requirements are clearly understood and timetables for collecting all required information are established and maintained
  • Actively maintain clear and ongoing communications with the London team and liaise with them on reporting requirements and needs of the project donor
  • Assist the Director of Operations and Programmes, and Head of Project Development (Sustainable Livelihoods, Environment and Conservation) on managing international donor site visits
  • Assist the Heads of Environment and Conservation and project manager in the design of monitoring and evaluation tools
  • Where necessary, assist Heads of Environment and Conservation, Head of Project Development and project manager in reviewing monitoring and evaluation information collected in order to feed into project development / redirection and future strategy
  • Liaise with the UK management team and Madagascar based Director of Operations and Programmes and Heads of Project Development on organisational policy, priorities and direction
  • Work with the Heads of the Project Development and Environment and Conservation in identifying gaps or further needs resulting from this project in line with community need and organisational capacity / priority
  • Work with Azafady’s media and communications staff to ensure all published information adequately reflects Azafady’s ethos, approach and projects and the prevailing circumstances in Madagascar
  • Assist Heads of Department and project managers to prepare internal reports as necessary to facilitate organisational learning
  • Attend meetings with Azafady’s project partners and stakeholders where appropriate 

Provide both professional and social support to the less experienced members of the international team members

  • Other tasks as requested by departmental heads and Director of Programmes and Operations

 

Contract duration: 12 months extendable to two years, with 3 month probationary period

Location: ONG Azafady, Fort Dauphin, Madagascar

Reporting to: Head of Project Development (Sustainable Livelihoods, Environment and Conservation); second line of reporting to Director of Operations & Programmes

Remuneration: Flight, insurance and small stipend (covers rent, basic living expenses) covered by this project

 

Required skills:

The successful applicant will:

  • Demonstrate commitment to Azafady’s ethos and approach
  • Have an MA, BA or BSc in an area relating to Sustainable Livelihoods with at least one years experience or a BA/BSc and at least two years experience in a related field
  • Demonstrate sound knowledge, experience and a keen interest in the areas of Sustainable Livelihoods, Environment and Conservation
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) to the level of editing English documents for publication
  • Excellent written communication skills and an ability to tailor written information for maximum impact among various audiences
  • Excellent report writing skills, ideally previous experience compiling project reports for donors
  • Cross-cultural negotiation skills
  • Flexible and patient attitude
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Curiosity and interest in effective work practices in cross-cultural settings
  • Ability and desire to build capacity across cultures
  • Excellent analytical skills, with demonstrable ability in gathering and assimilating facts and data from various sources
  • Ability and desire to work with teams from different economic and cultural backgrounds and across multiple language barriers
  • Demonstrate proven ability to work closely and independently with NGO and UK staff and volunteers
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of the Project Development Department’s role, needs and future development
  • Demonstrate social skills and leadership capabilities appropriate to the role
  • Have passion and motivation for the job and the ability to enthuse others
  • Demonstrate proven ability to recognise and appropriately deal with challenging situations
  • Demonstrate the ability and confidence to give clear guidance to Azafady interns and volunteers on the philosophy and procedures of Azafady in order to protect both their safety and the reputation of the NGO
  • Have excellent analytical skills, with demonstrable ability in gathering and assimilating facts and data from various sources, compiling documents and identifying lessons learned and best practice
  • Familiar with the use of project management tools including Logical Frameworks, work plans and Monitoring & Evaluation frameworks
  • Understand and be able to communicate the principals behind Participatory methodologies
  • Good understanding of the importance of project monitoring and evaluation and of approaches used to measure outcomes and impact
  • Demonstrate an awareness of and comfort with increased social and professional responsibility, working at all times with cultural sensitivity
  • Have excellent communication skills (both listening and speaking) at all levels
  • Ability to understand and speak French would be an advantage
  • Be able to work both independently and as part of a team
