Their sphere of interest is focused on sustainable conservation and community development in Southern Africa and also includes engagement with Wellbeing projects in the UK. An exciting new role has been created to support existing projects and help identify and evaluate new opportunities, including “Impact Investment” in the Southern Africa region. This position will suit someone used to working both autonomously and within a small team. They will work closely with the Director of Communities and Conservation, Africa (DCCA) and the Jamma International Office Manager.

FULL JOB DESCRIPTION Project Coordinator Conservation and Communities, Africa TERMS OF REFERENCE (TOR)
Background
Jamma International is an established Philanthropic and Active Impact Investment arm, of a Private Family Office. Their sphere of interest is focused on sustainable conservation and community development in Southern Africa and also includes engagement with Wellbeing projects in the UK. An exciting new role has been created to support existing projects and help identify and evaluate new opportunities, including “Impact Investment” in the Southern Africa region. This position will suit someone used to working both autonomously and within a small team. They will work closely with the Director of Communities and Conservation, Africa (DCCA) and the Jamma International Office Manager. The incumbent will be required to stand in for the DCCA and report/liaise directly to the Jamma Board as and when required.
Description of positionThe purpose of this position will be to: Promote conservation, protection and improvement of the natural environment · Promote the principles of sustainable utilisation of natural resources · Create recognition for and promote the important of role played by local people by furthering Community Based Natural Resource Management – CBNRM · Through implementation of CBNRM, prevent or relieve poverty and promote the improvement of the conditions of life in socially and economically disadvantaged communities · Facilitate local economic development and the empowerment of people and communities within the confines of CBNRM · With implementation of CBNRM, advance local education by providing or assisting in the provision of schools, school facilities and/or such other training facilities in socially and/or economically disadvantaged communities
The incumbent should be ready to: Support in the identifying and financing of specific projects to create long term and locally sustainable benefits · Think outside the box before implementing readymade solutions. Work within the specific local context, avoid imposing solutions simply because they may have worked elsewhere, be prepared to create something bespoke, if the situation requires it. · Support in the making of grants to individuals and organisations · Working closely with these individuals and organisations, overseeing implementation to ensure long term objectives and goals are met · Assume a business like and result oriented approach to all work undertaken, projects and causes supported · Treat all interventions as investments made to produce tangible and lasting results.
The role will require the ability to engage at all levels with UK and International Conservation and Environmental organisations (such as WWF, Greenpeace, etc.) as well as being able to communicate with indigenous local communities in Africa, on matters of importance to them.
Specific Duties
Qualifications and skills essential for this position
Master’s Degree in natural resource management, protected area management, biodiversity conservation or related discipline. Demonstrable field experience with conservation and or communities. Effective communication skills and willingness to network. Able to create workplans, define tasks and set and meet deadlines. Proposal writing and presentation skills. Familiarity with the dynamics and key issues relating to CBNRM in Southern Africa. Understanding of the factors constraining CBNRM and other conservation related projects/enterprises and with the ability to act creatively in response to these challenges. Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of collaborators, both at a Senior Agency level and also on the ground, with those directly affected by or engaged in the fulfilment of the projects/investments. Proven ability to write project proposals and reports Willingness when necessary to work long hours when required and not necessarily to a fixed routine. Good financial knowledge and budgeting skills Good knowledge software packages such as Microsoft Office. Good administrative and IT skills. Excellent skills in spoken and written English. Goal oriented able to meet targets and objectives. A passion for and commitment to Jamma values. Demonstrable research skills. A firm commitment to the concept of sustainable utilization in all of its forms as a useful and necessary tool for biodiversity conservation.
Qualifications and skills highly desirable for this position PhD with specialization in natural resource management, biodiversity conservation, community work or the like. GIS skills and experience. (ARC, QGIS or like) Analytical skills and familiarity with analytical/statisical software such as R African languages and/or Portuguese. Min 2 years working in Africa on conservation or community projects. Min 2 years coordination and/or project management experience. Business and or entrepreneurship experience or additional qualification.
