Project Coordinator / Survey Pilot, WCS Chad

Key Responsibilities

This is a full-time field based position responsible for coordinating wildlife surveys and ecological research, GIS databasing, aerial surveys and support to law enforcement and other WCS's project activities in Zakouma, Chad and neighboring areas of Cameroon and Central African Republic.  The position is based out of Zakouma National Park undertaking project activities approximately half time in Zakouma in cooperation with Government of Chad and African Parks.  The other half of the position’s responsibilities focus on WCS activities in cooperation with Governments of Chad, Cameroon, and Central African Republic Governments on wildlife surveys and support to wildlife law enforcement in key areas of the transboundary savanna region.  Duties include training and management of survey teams, organization and undertaking aerial surveys for wildlife and monitoring of human threats, providing aerial support to law enforcement efforts and monitoring, assuring sound operations, piloting and maintenance of WCS aircraft. The position also includes donor reporting and proposal writing for fundraising. The Project Coordinator/Survey Pilot reports to the WCS Director for Africa Wildlife Protection. 

 

Qualifications

The desired qualifications for this position are a Master's degree or PhD in wildlife conservation, ecology, conservation biology, or related field, at least 5 years of experience working on wildlife surveys, research, monitoring and conservation issues in Africa, proven ability to work well in a team in multi-cultural situations and under difficult field conditions.  Technical skills and knowledge in GIS, aerial surveys, wildlife protection monitoring, etc. Current US FAA pilot license, at least 250 hours PIC flying experience, strong knowledge of FAA regulations and aircraft maintenance requirements.  Experience with wildlife surveys and bush flying in remote areas. Ability to work in a team and under extreme field conditions. Working French and English language skills.
