Bird Studies Canada seeks a biologist to assist with all aspects of Ontario Region programs, particularly Ontario SwiftWatch and the Ontario Barn Swallow Project. Under the supervision of the Ontario Program Manger, the Ontario Region Project Biologist will work with the Ontario Stewardship Biologist and other BSC-Ontario Region staff to perform duties such as the following:

  • Increase awareness of Chimney Swift and Barn Swallow conservation through workshops, public events, and the design of interpretive panels;
  • Conduct stakeholder interviews regarding attitudes towards threatened Barn Swallows and Chimney Swifts;
  • Develop Beneficial Management Plans for Barn Swallows and Chimney Swifts;
  • Draft reports;
  • Manage data; and
  • Assist in various other aspects of Ontario Region Programs as needed.

This is a fixed-term contract position with a salary range of $28,964 to $40,442 per year, depending on skills and experience, plus mandatory legal benefits.

The full-time position is offered initially as a 7-month contract commencing 01 September 2013 with the possibility of extension and is based out of Bird Studies Canadas headquarters in Port Rowan, Ontario.

Skills, Education

The successful applicant will hold a M.Sc., or B.Sc. with relevant experience; have experience working with a variety of stakeholders; and have strong written and verbal communication skills. He/she should also have a strong background in ecology and conservation, excellent bird identification skills, and experience delivering public outreach. Experience working independently and good decision making skills are essential. The position requires good computer skills (MS Word, MS Access, MS Excel). Knowledge and experience with statistics for ecological data and related software is an asset.
