Context: Litigates Sierra Club cases which support the organization’s strategic conservation priorities, helps implements national strategic litigation campaigns to support the Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign with relation to coal exports and related coal mining and helps with building the Sierra Club’s in-house litigation component of its Environmental Law Program.

Scope: As part of a team of attorneys, the Project Attorney is involved with ongoing in-house legal duties (including courtroom and administrative litigation, implementation of the Club’s coal exports and mining related litigation docket), strategic planning with a range of Sierra Club leaders, fundraising, media work, and general administration of coal exports and mining related projects of the Environmental Law Program. The position involves daily contact with Sierra Club volunteer activists, staff, and attorneys throughout the nation.

Job Activities:

1. Track and monitor proposed coal export facilities and supporting rail infrastructure around the country.

2. Help to develop and implement legal strategies to fight coal exports and related mining.

3. Help manage and coordinate litigation regarding coal exports and related mining.

4. Assist in actively litigating strategic cases regarding coal exports and related mining.

5. Serve as a legal resource for campaign staff, Club volunteer leaders, and grassroots activists. Also help chapters develop and run their local campaigns against proposed coal export facilities and related mining.

6. Assist in developing informational, educational, and fundraising materials for Environmental Law Program.

7. Help supervise law student interns.

8. Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.

Knowledge & Skills:

-- J.D. degree and license to practice law

-- 2+ years of experience in the environmental law field.

-- Excellent writing and analytic skills.

-- Strong interpersonal and consensus-building skills.

-- Strong planning and project management skills.
