Born Free Foundation is an international wildlife charity that works worldwide for wild animal welfare and compassionate conservation. At the heart of the organisation is Zoo Check, an initiative that began in 1984 aimed at preventing captive wild
animal suffering. (See www.bornfree.org.uk for full details).

The Zoo Check department is now seeking two motivated and hardworking individuals to join its team based in Horsham, West Sussex. Although both positions are within the same team, the roles are separate.

POSITION 1

Project Assistant: (reference ZCCD)

Role:

Office-based assistance and support to Senior Animal Welfare Scientist and Zoo Check team on captive animal issues relating to zoos, circuses and exotic animals, primarily focussed on the UK and Ireland. Over time, this role may lead to responsibility for individual projects within this and related areas, under the supervision of the Senior Animal Welfare Scientist and Head of Campaigns.

Tasks will include, but are not limited to, the following: researching scientific and general information sources; writing/editing briefing notes and reports; liaison with national and local government authorities and other NGOs: helping address, with colleagues, public complaints concerning captive animal issues; organising meetings, minute taking and distribution; general office admin; data entry and maintenance of information databases and assistance with the Compassionate Conservation initiative.

Requirements:

Degree in a biological science or related field

Knowledge of animal welfare and conservation

Excellent office and communication skills

Attention to detail and excellent organisational skills

Ability to work unsupervised and under pressure to meet deadlines

Desirable assets:

Experience of research and/or campaigning on animal welfare issues

Knowledge of issues specifically relating to wild animals in captivity

Relevant postgraduate qualification

Experience of data analysis

Lobbying, policy or legal experience

Salary:

c £18,000 p.a.

This will be a contracted position for a specified time period, with the possibility of longer-term employment. POSITION 2

Project Assistant (reference ZCDT)

Role:

Office-based assistance and support to the Senior Programmes Manager and Zoo Check team on captive animal issues in the EU and overseas, specifically relating to ongoing projects and initiatives: The EU Zoo Inquiry 2011 (www.euzooinquiry.eu),
Travellers’ Animal Alert (www.bornfree.org.uk/TAA) and ENDCAP. Over time, the role may lead to occasional international travel and greater responsibility, including coordination of individual projects and EU lobbying under the supervision of the Senior Programmes Manager.

Tasks will include, but are not limited to, the following: research and data analysis; liaison with MEPs and officials from the European Institutions; organising meetings and travel arrangements; general office admin, budget management and project
support; administration of ENDCAP and liaison with Member NGOs; and helping address, with colleagues, public complaints concerning global captive animal issues.

Requirements:

Degree in a biological science or related field

Knowledge of animal welfare

Excellent office and communication skills

Attention to detail and excellent organisational skills

Ability to work unsupervised and under pressure to meet deadlines

Desirable assets:

Experience of research and/or campaigning on animal welfare issues

Knowledge of issues specifically relating to wild animals in captivity

Fluency in French (written and spoken)

Experience of data analysis

Lobbying,  policy or legal experience

Salary:

c £18,000 p.a.
