Essential Qualification

Masters’ Degree in Life Science (Genetics/Biotechnology/Molecular Biology) Zoology/with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

Prior experience of molecular work with non-invasive samples is desirable. Theoretical understanding of population genetics is a plus. Knowledge of basic population genetic analysis is an added advantage.

Description of Work

The study provides a unique opportunity to combine field work and laboratory work to study meta-population dynamics of tigers in the Terai Arc landscape, India. Using a combination of ecology, genetics and habitat mapping approaches this project aims to determine 1) the extent to which tigers occupy unprotected areas within this landscape, 2) what are the source and sink populations, 3) population estimates, rates and direction of tiger emigration at metapopulation scale, 4) what landscape features, if any, affect connectivity in this landscape and 5) social dynamics and population structure within this landscape.

The student is expected to spend 70% of the time in the lab to conduct the molecular work and data analysis, with about 30% of the time in the field to collect samples and associated data. Depending on performance, the student shall be encouraged to register for a Ph.D., as desired.
