GRID-Arendal (www.grida.no) is seeking temporary support for several marine-based project within the Ecosystems, Economies and Sustainable Development programme during a maternity leave. The position will support in the development of communication tools and products, as well as in the identification and development of good practice case studies and other capacity development and peer-learning material.

The duration of this temporary position is 1 year, starting soonest in October 2016.  The ideal candidate has a background in marine conservation issues and ecosystem services as well as experience in developing communication products. The project assistant will work closely with team members in the Economies, Environment and Sustainable Development Programme as well as with the Communications programme, to assist in develop and promoting appropriate tools and approaches to support sound environmental decision-making.

The enthusiastic candidate will work with a small, but highly motivated international team. The position is based at GRID-Arendal offices in Arendal, Norway.

The main activities of this position are to:

  • Support the project management of and communication needs around an Integrated Marine Management project in West Africa;
  • Help curate content around marine ecosystem services in relation to their role in conservation finance, development policies and the Sustainable Development Goals;
  • Conduct research and support the identification of good practice case studies on marine conservation finance as well as on the integration of ecosystem services into marine planning;
  • Support in strategically develop a network on blue forest ecosystems and their related ecosystem services within a Norwegian context; and,
  • Conceptually develop innovative communication products, such as story maps, videos and social media content for a wide variety of stakeholders and end users.

Preferred professional qualifications

  • BA or equivalent/higher in marine science, environmental politics, environmental economics or similar field
  • Experience in marine conservation, ecosystem services and sustainable development
  • Experience in developing innovative communication products for a wide variety of audiences
  • Detail-orientation, ability to balance several tasks, projects and deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to take responsibility for the completion of comprehensive tasks.
  • Excellent language proficiency in English, in particular excellent writing and editing skills
  • Additional language skills, Norwegian and French in particular, would be an advantage.
  • Experience in working with the United Nations system, especially UNEP is an advantage.

Compensation:

GRID-Arendal’s salary system is linked to the Norwegian Government salary system. It is based on education and experience. Salaries are subject to Norwegian tax regulations. Insurances and personal benefits are provided in addition to salary.
