Description

Phra Thong Island is located 200 km north of Phuket, in Kura Buri District, Phang Nga province. It is part of a group of three islands and is considered, even if there are only few turtles left, one of the main sea turtle nesting sites left along the Andaman Sea coast of Thailand. These sites are under pressure from fishing activities, egg poaching and uncontrolled tourism development.

A conservation project in collaboration with the Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC) has been running since 1996 with the help of many volunteers from all over the world who are coordinated by a field leader and assistants during each season. The main activities include monitoring nesting beaches, nest protection, behavioural observation, environmental education in the local school, awareness and education in the village, and public awareness with a few tourists.

Specific tasks and responsibilities of Project Assistants: help the field leader in the role of co-ordinating volunteers, monitoring activities and boat transfers; organise awareness activities and lessons for local people and for volunteers; English lessons, fund raising activities, creation of materials for a display area, workshops in the local school, etc; data entry and revision on a daily basis under the field leader supervision; weekly reporting of project activities and writing blog entries; compile a final report at the end of the project.

Project Assistants receive free board and lodging for the duration of their stay.

If you have any questions or want to apply please visit the VWT website and then contact host organisation directly. This project is listed on page one of the volunteer pages (look for the image of a sea turtle).
