The Programs Director, Mexico provides leadership and manages the strategic planning, fundraising and implementation of all program activities in Mexico, which include sustainable forestry, agriculture, tourism, finance, education and climate projects. S/he mobilizes institutional alignment to meet country needs, orchestrates integrated execution, enables sustainable program design, sources innovation locally and harnesses best practices. The Director provides strategic and technical leadership, ensures overall management and fundraising (foundations, bilateral and multilateral, corporations), and builds partnerships both internally and externally. S/he will work with a wide range of stakeholders, such as small producers, private landowners, tourism service providers, civil society organizations, donors, corporations, partner organizations and governments. S/he will be responsible for representing the Rainforest Alliance and advancing efforts to work with producers, companies and individuals. 

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities:

Leadership and Management

  • Deliver effective and impactful implementation of Rainforest Alliance projects and programs;
  • Foster a culture of business and project management excellence in all aspects of program work in Mexico;
  • Align programmatic work in Mexico to Rainforest Alliance strategies and priorities and mission through effective change management, communication and ensuring internal collaboration;
  • Provide day-to-day management of programs and enable structures for cross-functional and cross-project collaboration;
  • Strengthen Rainforest Alliance programs for capacity building (both internal and external);
  • Delegate authority to managers, ensure they are effective and supported, and ensure planned objectives are achieved and in line with budgets and related policies;
  • Ensure timely completion of program progress reports and annual planning; oversee planning and budgeting, reporting and contractual compliance by country programs per funders' and Rainforest Alliance requirements;
  • Guide, motivate, and develop personnel; including establishing a clear link for employees to see their work relating to Rainforest Alliance’s over mission and strategic priorities;
  • Ensure compliance and competitive cost when contracting outside of Rainforest Alliance;
  • Identify and manage financial, legal, and technical risks and escalate issues appropriately;
  • Collaborate with Rainforest Alliance leadership to effectively manage crises and conflicts;

Outreach and External Engagement

  • Develop and maintain functional partnerships with NGOs, governments and other stakeholders;
  • Actively promote the use and consumption of Rainforest Alliance Certified products and services;
  • Conduct outreach and communication efforts with stakeholders, funders and key partners to disseminate program approaches, results and impacts;
  • Coordinate alignment with Pronatura Sur, our Mexico SAN partner, and other local and international partners;
  • Represent Rainforest Alliance at key events, presentations, policy forums and round tables and communicate program achievements;
  • Direct the strategic development of communications and/or marketing materials promoting our impacts in Mexico;
  • Attend media interviews when requested by our Communications team.

 

Development

  • Develop strategies with supervisors for long-term financial stability of the Mexico programs, including collaboration with the Rainforest Alliance Development unit and other programs to develop and secure long-term funding for programs and new projects in Mexico;
  • Contribute to writing and budgeting of fundraising proposals;
  • Mentor staff to broaden their fundraising skills, help them manage existing fundraising relationships, cultivate new funding prospects; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position will oversee staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resource or business related field, Master’s degree preferred;
  • Minimum 10 years of international field experience in rural economic development, small business development, and/or natural resources management, with 7 years managerial experience;
  • Proven technical skills in forest and/or natural resources management at the international level;
  • Knowledge of FSC, SAN and GSTC certification and other certification and verification standards and systems;
  • Direct experience in USAID, GEF and other bi-lateral and multi-lateral proposal writing, reporting and management processes;
  • Knowledge in the evolving area of payment for environmental service, in particular forest carbon and REDD+;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint and willingness to learn new software as necessary (e.g. Salesforce, SharePoint, administrative/budgeting software, etc.);
  • Excellent writing, editing and verbal communication skills;
  • Written and verbal proficiency in English required;
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple priorities in a time sensitive manner;  
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to interact culturally, linguistically, and diplomatically with diverse internal and external individuals; 
  • Ability to establish a well-known track record of requiring employees and matrix stakeholders to adhere to high standards of performance excellence; 
  • Initiative, self-motivated, resourceful, detail-oriented, dependability, strong attention to detail;
  • Knowledge of, and commitment to environmental issues and sustainability practices, experience in a not-for-profit and international environment preferred; and
  • Ability to travel a minimum of 30% per year, nationally and internationally.
