Description

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an inter-governmental organisation mandated with the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy. At present, IRENA has 149 Members (148 States and the European Union) that acceded to its Statute, and 27 additional States in the process of accession and actively engaged. IRENA supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future, and serves as the principal platform for international cooperation, a centre of excellence, and a repository of policy, technology, resource and financial knowledge on renewable energy. The Agency implements its mandate with the view to sustainable development, increased energy security and low-carbon economic growth and prosperity.

IRENA Innovation and Technology Centre (IITC) is responsible for the provision of the means for an accelerated renewable energy technology uptake, considering national conditions of resource endowment, social and economic frameworks. In accordance with the IRENA Statute, activities in this field include analysis of renewable energy technology policies; dissemination of information and increased awareness; technologies and equipment overview and assessment of success- failure factors; improved pertinent knowledge and technology transfer, and joint RD&D and provision of information about the development and deployment of national and international technical standards in relation to renewable energy.

REmap assesses global renewable options with a 2030 and 2050 time horizon. Technology options are characterized by their potentials, cost and benefits. The options cover power generation as well and the three end use sectors buildings, industry and transportation. Remap findings can be used to develop energy scenarios and they can inform decision making on roadmaps and target setting. Concrete policy recommendations are provided how these options can be put in practice. At this moment 50 countries that represent around 80% of global energy use participate in this programme.

Under the supervision of the Project Leader, the Programme Officer, Renewable Energy Roadmaps (REMAP) will:

  • Develop sector, national and regional analysis to support renewable energy roadmaps development in the REMAP framework.
  • Coordinate and assist in expanding the network of national REMAP experts.
  • Assess established and emerging renewable energy technology options in terms of potential, cost and various social, economic and environmental impacts.
  • Contribute to the dialogue with governments and other stakeholders to create a platform for implementation of the roadmaps.
  • Upon request assist in the implementation of the roadmap.
  • Prepare various written outputs and audio-visual materials to support the analysis and contribute to the outreach activities.
  • Provide substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, including preparation of documents and presentations.
  • Upon request, represent IRENA in international fora, meetings and conferences. Performs other duties as required.
  • Assist in funding mobilization.

Qualifications

Education: Advanced University degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in energy planning, economics, engineering, policy, environment or natural science, or other relevant field related to the development of energy roadmaps. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. In-depth knowledge of energy supply and demand dynamics and energy technology deployment, and understanding of technology and policy issues related to energy transitions in both power and end-use sectors. PhD in relevant field would be an advantage.

Experience: At least five years of experience and proven track record of high quality publications in energy analysis, project development skills, and knowledge of energy financing programmes or renewable energy technology deployment. Ability to develop and sustain a constructive dialogue with stakeholders, ability to deliver under high pressure in a rapidly changing policy environment.  A good network to support national analyses and knowledge of global renewable energy and climate change issues.

Language: Excellent command of written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of other languages is desirable.

1 Net Salary is determined according to the dependency status of the staff. The dependency benefits are provided in the form of higher net salaries and allowances for staff with dependants (dependency or "D" rate) than for those without dependants (single or "S" rate). 2 Post adjustment multiplier for Bonn currently 27.3% of the Annual Net Salary; determined by the International Civil Service Commission (ICSC) and subject to change.

3 The amounts for the following benefits are only indicative and subject to periodic adjustments: Dependency allowance (US$2,929 per dependent child p.a), non-removal allowance, if applicable (US$2,150 with dependents, US$1,620 without dependents p.a), medical insurance for staff members and dependents, Rental subsidy, Provident Fund, and other entitlements as applicable.
