Working closely with local partners, the Africa Programme currently includes a broad range of species and landscape targeted conservation initiatives in Liberia, Guinea, DRC, Uganda, Kenya, Mozambique and South Africa and has programme offices in Monrovia, Conakry, Kinshasa, Kampala and Nairobi. 

FFI has supported wildlife conservation and management in Mozambique since 2002, when it commenced a long-term programme for the protection of the 42,000 km² Niassa National Reserve, primarily through support to Sociedade para Gesta e Desenvolvimento da Reserva do Niassa (SGDRN), the public-private agency that manages all conservation activities and oversees all private sector tourism operations within the Reserve.  Although FFI has a limited in-country presence, through its local partner, FFI has invested over $7 million in direct operational and technical support to the Niassa Reserve to date, with the aim of establishing a sustainable model for protection of its diversity of habitats and its nationally and continentally important wildlife populations, with the multiple use values of the reserve (including tourism, and funding/markets for ecosystem services/REDD) realised to the benefit of both wildlife and resident communities, in partnership with the Government of Mozambique.  Complementary projects have been managed at regional level within Niassa Reserve for integrated land use planning, management of water catchments and fisheries, and cross-border cooperation on wildlife management and law enforcement with Tanzania.  FFI is aiming to strengthen and diversify its support to conservation efforts and sites in Mozambique, including Niassa, but with emphasis on developing partnerships with government and the private sector.

Building on the achievements and relationships established in Mozambique to date, FFI is seeking a Programme Manager to ensure the effective management and oversight of FFI’s in-country programme and local partnerships. The successful candidate will have the strategic vision, leadership and administrative skills to lead and develop the programme and partnerships with local NGOs, private sector and government ministries in Mozambique, with responsibility for project oversight and representation for FFI. S/he will have an international reputation in nature conservation, community conservation and/or natural resource management, extensive experience of working closely with government agencies, NGOs and donor agencies and the proven ability to establish and manage teams composed of in-house and in-country partners. S/he will have excellent communication skills and the demonstrable ability to engage effectively at all levels of government and civil society and community-based organisations. S/he will have a degree or equivalent training or experience in a relevant discipline such as wildlife and/or forest, social sciences and substantial experience in a related role.
