Title: PROGRAMME ASSISTANT, MEDITERRANEAN SPECIES PROGRAMME Work percentage: 100% Type of contract: 3 years (with possibility of extension) Expected start date: 15 June 2011 Duty station: IUCN Mediterranean Cooperation Centre, Malaga, Spain Reporting to: Programme Officer, Mediterranean Species Programme Position Grade: A3 BACKGROUND The IUCN Mediterranean Cooperation Centre was opened in October 2001 and is located in Malaga, Spain. IUCN has over 179 members in the Mediterranean region, including 15 governments. Its mission is to influence, encourage and assist Mediterranean societies to conserve and use sustainably the natural resources of the region. As part of its activities, the IUCN Mediterranean Cooperation Centre is strongly involved in assessing and monitoring the conservation status of all vertebrates and selected invertebrates and plants groups in the Mediterranean region, through the Mediterranean Biodiversity Assessment Initiative phase II. Based on these evaluations, initiatives and actions to preserve this biodiversity are undertaken. Therefore, the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced applicant to fill the position of Programme Assistant in order to strength its Mediterranean Species Programme. Specific tasks and responsibilities: • Contribute to the development and implementation of the Mediterranean Biodiversity Assessment Initiative and the Mediterranean Biodiversity Platform. • Liaise closely with Specialist Groups, Red List authorities and other experts and institutions. • Obtain and/or prepare the necessary documentation required for the species assessments, in collaboration with relevant experts. • Assist the Programme Coordinator on organizing assessments and training workshops, as requested, both at national and regional levels. • Support the Mediterranean Species Programme Coordinator in developing fundraising proposals • Communicate the results of the Programme to relevant regional partners, Conventions, IUCN members and stakeholders. • Report on project activities on a regular basis, or as required by IUCN or donors • Support in the improvement the day to day organizations of the work and the adaptation to the request of the office administration or of the donors. • Support in the preparation of reports (technical and administrative) or as required by IUCN or donors including Periodical report on ongoing activities and results achievement. • Contribute to the management and documentation base for major meetings in which the Centre is involved. • Participate in staff and technical program meetings. • Contribute trough articles and public awareness information to the IUCN Med Centre Communications unit. • Undertake other tasks/emerging issues at the request of the Species Programme Coordinator and Director to ensure the effective implementation of the programme. • University degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science or any related field REQUIREMENTS • Knowledge on species conservation (Red Lists, species/critical habitat assessments, Key Biodiversity Areas, etc.) or landscape ecology • At least three years of professional experience demonstrating strong skills of project management and coordination • Excellent communication, planning and organizational skills needed • Fluency in spoken and written English. A good understanding of French or Spanish or other Mediterranean language is an asset • Ability to work flexibly and with initiative, in a team and in a multicultural context • Very good skills in use of MS Office and database management • Knowledge in Geographical Information System (GIS) software an advantage. The gross annual salary for this position is 34.288 € 5.
