Program Specialist, Responsible Mining & Energy Program

Description

The Program Specialist will provide support to the Responsible Mining and Energy (RM&E) Program in delivery of work products that develop and advance key sector partnerships, as well as promote CI’s work to innovate and demonstrate responsible business practices within the industry. Core responsibilities of the Program Specialist, RM&E include:

Writing: support Program and sector Account Leads in drafting of proposals, project documents, communications materials, and documenting CI’s RM&E expertise in publications.

Research: conduct benchmarking, due diligence, and other research in support of key sector partnerships and projects.

Other: provide additional RM&E project and team support related to delivery of key sector strategic objectives and partnerships.

This position will work in close collaboration with members of the RM&E team, as well as other CELB staff and other CI divisions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Writing

  • Support the financial sustainability of the RM&E Program and CI’s broader work with the sector through supporting the Senior Director, RM&E and other team members in the drafting of proposals to companies, foundations, and other potential funding entities.
  • Develop draft communications materials for major RM&E corporate relationships (i.e. communications plans, blogs, articles, leadership briefing documents, PowerPoints, etc.) in support of RM&E Account Leads and in close collaboration, as appropriate, with CI Communications staff.
  • Support the Senior Director, RM&E and other team members in drafting and editing of project documents for major RM&E corporate relationships.
  • Document CI experiences with the sector through drafting case studies and thought leadership publications, under direction of the Senior Director, RM&E and in collaboration with CI Communications staff as appropriate.

Research

  • Document sector best practices and emerging industry trends in areas of strategic focus for the RM&E Program (i.e. biodiversity offsets, social policies and practices, green infrastructure, hydraulic fracturing, deep sea mining, etc.), captured in concise memos.
  • Conduct benchmarking research of companies’ practices across a range of key performance areas to inform strategy for the RM&E Program and major corporate relationships, and synthesize findings as needed to deliver to major RM&E partners or in thought leadership publications.
  • Lead development of due diligence research reports for major RM&E corporate relationships to support compliance with CI’s Policy on Corporate Associations, under direction of the Senior Director, RM&E and other team members.

Other

  • Support Senior Director, RM&E in CI institutional planning efforts.
  • As needed, work with RM&E Account Leads to support drafting of contracts and budgets.
  • When required, provide other RM&E project and team support related to delivery of the RM&E strategy and commitments under major corporate relationships.

Working Conditions

  • Position is based in the CI-Virginia HQ office.
  • Ability to travel occasionally, as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required 

  • Four-year college degree, preferably in Environmental Science/Studies or related field.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience relevant to environmental conservation and responsible development practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, particularly with demonstrated analytical and synthetic writing abilities.
  • Demonstrated superior research skills with ability to quickly attain expertise in new topics.
  • Self starter that is proactive about looking for new, creative ways to support the program in achieving results.
  • Mature, positive, and people-friendly demeanor.

Preferred

  • Experience-based knowledge of business practices relevant to responsible mining.
  • Experience working directly with international partners from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Non-profit experience.
  • Demonstrated passion for international conservation and development.
  • Foreign language proficiency e.g. Spanish, Portuguese, French, Mandarin, or Bahasa.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Collaborative style.
  • Comfort operating in an entrepreneurial environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace.
