World Wildlife Fund's (WWF) Northern Great Plains (NGP) Program works across a five-state region with private, public, and tribal partners. Our vision is a future where thriving prairies and an abundance of wildlife contribute to the economic and cultural sustainability of the people who live in the Northern Great Plains. WWF works with tribal partners to ensure the sustainability of tribal wildlife conservation for current and future generations by creating sustainable financing, engaging local communities and leadership, and connecting conservation with culture.


Under the supervision of a Senior Program Officer, the Program Officer will plan, manage, communicate, and implement project and program priorities and activities in areas of assignment.

  1. Manages administrative functions to support tribal program and project management by responding to requests for oral and written information. Works directly with project personnel, grantees, donors, consultants, and others to facilitate coordination, communication, and regular reporting. Involved with outreach to donors from corporate, non-profit, and governmental sectors.
  2. Contributes to the development of regional or programmatic planning. Involved in the development of tribal program strategy. Participates in stakeholder and partner group meetings.
  3. Develops, plans and implements new and ongoing tribal projects and grants. Works with project personnel, grantees, consultants, and others to facilitate coordination, communication, and regular reporting. Develops project operating plans with associated budgets.
  4. Researches fundraising proposals and assists in planning for funding from private foundations and/or government agencies. Prepares and finalizes scopes of work, budgets, and administrative information for contracts and to ensure compliance with donor requirements.
  5. Reviews the performance outcomes and status of all activities and evaluates and reports these results. May travel to project sites to monitor and evaluate project progress and reports back, verbally and in writing. May supervise consultants in their work toward project and program goals and objectives.
  6. Monitors and analyzes new technical information, sustainable financing, bison quarantine, policy development issues, and trends related to the program and advises others accordingly. Keeps abreast of issues in areas in which WWF has an ongoing interest like bison management, black-footed ferret management, tribal lands policy and issues, and tribal funding sources and opportunities.
  7. Responsible for acquiring and gathering data relevant to specific conservation projects from tribal partners, conservation peers, governmental agencies, and universities.
  8. Supports planning, organizing, and implementing workshops, meetings and events involving tribal project and program team members and partners.
  9. Must be willing to travel up to 30% of time to attend meetings and liaise with project partners.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

  1. Education/Experience: A Bachelor's degree is required. A graduate degree in a related field is preferred, such as natural resources management, environmental science, or wildlife management. Position requires a minimum of five years of experience in program management, biodiversity conservation, or natural resources management as well as an understanding of sustainable tourism, economic development, public policy, and community conservation in the west.
  2. Skills and Abilities
    • Cultural sensitivity training and/or past experience working with indigenous and rural communities will be considered an asset
