Program Director

Greenpeace is currently seeking a Program Director to provide leadership in the development and implementation of our people-centred campaigns that will have significant impact towards a just and sustainable future for all. Committed to excellence, ambition and risk-taking the Program Director leads the Program Directorate to deliver national and international programs. S/he is responsible for setting direction, strategy and plans for the campaigns and communications for Greenpeace Canada.

Greenpeace Canada is an independent international campaigning organization working to protect our oceans, forests, the Arctic and stopping climate change through a clean energy revolution. In Canada we have over 100 staff working across the country with our thousands of supporters to advance both national and international campaigns.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Reporting to the Executive Director, the Program Director demonstrates considerable independence and initiative with respect to decision-making, and provides leadership for development and implementation of campaign and communications strategies in close collaboration with fundraising and engagement teams in order to achieve well-integrated and impactful campaign and program work;
  • Providing program team leadership the Director oversees the recruitment, performance management, motivation, and the work of program staff engaged in specialized campaign program areas and project teams e.g. climate change and energy, forests, oceans and Arctic;
  • Providing leadership in the monitoring and evaluation of the programmes;
  • Building our profile and cutting-edge approach by keeping abreast of current and emerging political, economic and social developments relating to the campaign issues and media trends;
  • Overseeing the budget of the Programme Directorate and supporting fundraising efforts for campaigns;
  • Actively representing Greenpeace in public activities, the business, scientific and government sectors, the environmental community at large and the media, to achieve campaign objectives and strengthen the profile and credibility of Greenpeace Canada. Undertake reactive and proactive media work as required;
  • Working closely with the other three Directors (Fundraising, Finance/Operations, Executive Director) and the Strategic Leadership Team in the overall leadership and management of Greenpeace Canada and accountability to the Board;
  • Represent Greenpeace Canada within Greenpeace International working closely with other offices to advance our national and global program objectives.

PROFILE REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong strategic and analytical abilities with at least 5 years of experience in a management position;
  • Experience working with or for Greenpeace and experience in delivering successful high-impact campaigns;
  • High levels of emotional intelligence with a proven track record in building and leading high-performing teams;
  • Experience leading and managing complex projects;
  • Commitment to peaceful confrontation as a critical theory of change and the principles of non-violent direct action;
  • Fluency in English, proficiency in French highly desirable;
  • Demonstrated commitment to human rights, social justice in both programmatic work and management practice;
  • Ability to be decisive, a risk taker and able to manage highly stressful situations in an increasing volatile context;
  • Globally minded and experience working internationally with diverse cultures and across time-zones;
  • Committed to deepening the values and practice of integrity, trust, excellence, mutual respect, diversity, equality, and risk-taking into the culture of Greenpeace;
  • Able to bring inspiration, courage, optimism, humour and energy to the work, supporters, and volunteers;
  • Able to travel and work weekends/after hours on a limited basis.

Location of the position is in Toronto, Canada, though Vancouver and Montreal are optional.
