Program Coordinator(s) / Adviser(s) Central Africa

The destruction of the world’s rainforests is one of our time’s biggest environmental disasters. Every year an area of 130 000 km2 of tropical forest disappears. Rainforest Foundation Norway is one of Europe’s leading organizations in the work to protect the world’s rainforests and strengthen the rights of indigenous peoples, in cooperation with local indigenous and environmental organizations in Southeast Asia, Central Africa and the Amazon.

Rainforest Foundation Norway is a non-governmental organization of 40 employees, working in 10 rainforest countries, together with more than 100 local contract partners.

We are looking for one and possibly two experienced Program Coordinators / Advisers to our program “Rights-based rainforest protection in the Congo Basin”, mainly in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Program Coordinator(s) / Adviser(s) will be based in our office in Oslo, Norway, work in a department of 4 people and be responsible for results and achievements within the program.

Responsibilities

  • Following up civil society partners in DRC and assessing their plans and initiatives.
  • Project development and administrative, technical and financial project management.
  • Maintaining and developing contacts with local, national and regional organizations and authorities, and ensuring coordination and cooperation between partners.
  • Communication with and reporting to NORAD and others, as well as production of information products to the public.
  • Co-responsible for Rainforest Foundation Norway’s strategic thinking and prioritization of partners, projects and activities within the program.

 Qualifications

  • Experience from Central Africa is necessary; experience from DRC is an asset.
  • At least 2 years of experience from project management within development, environment, rainforest management and/or indigenous peoples is necessary.

This includes project planning, implementation, follow up and reporting, including writing project proposals and budgeting.

  • Written and verbal proficiency in French and English is necessary.
  • Relevant higher education and good strategic and analytical skills are necessary.
  • Experience from policy work and advocacy is an asset.

 Personal qualities

  • You are highly motivated and genuinely interested in environment and indigenous peoples’ rights.
  • You are able to understand complex issues, process large quantities of information and work under pressure.
  • You are culturally sensitive and able to adapt to complex contexts and cultures.
  • You are willing and able to travel 8 weeks a year – often under difficult conditions.
  • You show initiative, are responsible and able to think and work independently, but also in close collaboration with partners and colleagues.
  • You are willing to learn Norwegian.

 

We have flexible work hours and a pension agreement. Annual salary will be between 384 700 NOK and 493 900 NOK, or between 485 400 NOK and 533 000 NOK, depending on qualifications.

Starting date: As soon as possible (1st position) and August 1st (2nd possible position).
