Everglades National Park 

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) the nation’s leading conservation service organization for young people is seeking an experienced quality-oriented outdoor leader to supervise two staff and two groups of 30 college student volunteers during this upcoming Spring Break.  

The SCA teams will work in partnership with Everglades National Park staff to support and complete various and conservation projects.

Projects could include:

  • Invasive Species removal
  • Native plant restoration
  • Trail construction maintenance and repair.


This project is scheduled to be completed in two sessions:   

1st Session:  March 4 - March 10, 2012 
2nd Session: March 18 – March 24, 2012   

The Everglades National Park will provide general project oversight, plans, materials, tools, and personal protective gear for the projects.         

The SCA Program Coordinator is responsible for coordinating with the SCA manager and park staff on the planning, design, implementation and evaluation of the project as well as safely supervising the team in all aspects of their work. This is a full-time, temporary position.

Period of Employment: February 6 – march 31, 2010 (8 weeks)

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with SCA/NP staff to help plan for project implementation.
  • Direct all aspects of orientation and training of volunteers.
  • Directly supervise volunteers and staff on the project.
  • Have a working knowledge and comply with all SCA/NP policies and procedures
  • Coordinate with NP staff to provide education and entertainment opportunities for the volunteers
  • Manage all logistics for the project, including vehicles; camp set up, meals, equipment, supplies, and safe transportation of volunteers to/from airport, requires travel throughout the east Cost and Florida.
  • Assist the SCA Program Manager with program management including but not limited to budget management and reconciliation.
  • Manage all aspects of SCA Safety and Risk Management protocols.
  • Facilitate building an environment that promotes teamwork between SCA and the NP.
  • Represent SCA/NP in a positive and professional manner.
  • Coordinate with and report to SCA Program Manager to ensure full compliance with program standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • 21 years of age or older required.
  • 3+ years prior experience in supervising young adults in an outdoor, setting required.
  • Current Wilderness First Responder/CPR certification required.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills; strong work ethic are required.
  • Self starter ability to work independently and as part of a large team.
  • Ability to carry heavy loads up to 50 pounds and ability to work in outdoor environment exposed to the elements including camping and hiking for extended periods of time.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards.
  • Must pass criminal background check.
  • Working knowledge of safely operating power and hand-tools required.

Compensation:

Starting salary: $590 per week for the 8-week period.  Relocation travel reimbursement to/from the park up to $500. Meals provided.  Program Vehicles will be provided to transport the team for project purposes. Accommodations will be a front country group campground with running water and flush toilets.  

This position will require the individual to use their own personal gear (tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad) for the duration of the project.  SCA will provide all gear to set up a group kitchen including stoves, water filters, coolers etc.
