Description

The Rainforest Alliance (RA) is an international nonprofit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. SmartWood (SW) is a program of the Rainforest Alliance created in 1989; it is the oldest global forestry certification program and has been accredited by the internationally recognized Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). SmartWood's mission is to promote the implementation of sustainable forestry worldwide. To accomplish this, SmartWood provides forest management and chain of custody certification services. Chain-of-Custody (CoC) certification verifies the flow of certified forest products through the supply chain, from the forest to the point of sale, assuring consumers and forest product companies that the wood they buy comes from certified forests.

Position Summary

The Forestry Specialist (Mexico) will be responsible for supporting the sale and development of SmartWood certification services. S/he will provide customer service to existing and potential clients and facilitate training courses. S/he will also organize, lead and participate in forest management assessments, chain-of-custody assessments and audits.

Summary of Consultancy:

The Program Associate will facilitate the execution of Chain-of-Custody (CoC) and Forest Management (FM) certification services and will support market development for SW CoC and FM certification services to clients. S/he will primarily be responsible for the day-to-day oversight, coordination and administration of all SW CoC and FM clients in Western Europe and Africa through coordination with local SW representatives. S/he will be directly involved in all aspects of CoC and FM certification assessments and audits including scheduling, project management, customer service, oversight of contract auditors and quality control. S/he will support the development of sales and business targets for the region.

Responsibilities

  • Support the SW CoC and FM Coordinators to facilitate the execution of CoC and FM pre-assessments, assessments and audits in Western Europe and Africa including budgeting, creating service contracts, logistical planning, supporting consultants, reviewing reports, liaising with clients, coordinating peer review and finalizing and reviewing reports;
  • Develop and implement audit schedules and ensure timely and efficient completion of audits;
  • Ensure efficiency, quality control and adherence to SW technical and administration certification protocols;
  • Provide customer service to current and potential SW clients in Western Europe and Africa to include, but not limited to, providing information about certification, guidance on interpretation of certification standards and the certification process and logo use;
  • Develop strong expertise in SW and FSC CoC and FM policies and protocols;
  • Act as a primary point of contact in CoC and FM client correspondence;
  • Contribute to developing client recruitment strategies for Western Europe and Africa regions;
  • Conduct presentations, attend meetings and assist with the organization and facilitation of training courses to promote SW and FSC certification;
  • Provide input for SW policy development and technical improvements to the certification system;
  • Manage questions and disputes relating to active certification assessments and clients consistent with SW and FSC policies;
  • Act as auditor on a selected pre-assessments, assessments and audits;
  • Provide periodic progress reports to the Regional Manager; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Forestry, Forest Products, Natural Resources Management, or related field;
  • 2 to 3 years professional experience, preferably in forest products industry, forestry, or related field;  field forestry experience advantageous;
  • Excellent customer service skills;
  • Environmental/management system auditor training experience preferred;
  • Knowledge of SW certification and/or FSC certification a plus;
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills in English, Spanish and preferably one other European language (particularly German or French);
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously;
  • A diplomatic and tactful approach;
  • Ability to be flexible and take initiative in a changing and fast-growing environment;
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Word, Access, Internet Explorer, PowerPoint, Excel); and
  • Willingness to travel 20% of time.
