Directory Entry : Founded in 1967 as the Environmental Defense Fund, we tackle the most serious environmental problem...a scrappy group of scientists and a lawyer on Long Island, New York, fighting to save osprey from the toxic pesticide DDT. Using scientific evidence, our founders got DDT banned nationwide. Today, we’re one of the world's leading environmental organizations. In the U.S., Fortune magazine called our board one of the country's most influential nonprofit boards. You can see the jobs of the EDF on their website.

EDF's Oil & Gas Program

Natural gas is an important and growing part of our nation’s energy portfolio.  The increasing use of natural gas, especially for electricity generation, has huge implications for the future of the energy system and reducing its greenhouse gas emissions.  It could be a win-win, if--and this is a big "if"--we do it the right way. The "right way" entails putting tough rules in place, including those for natural gas exploration and production, that lock in mandatory environmental safeguards to protect land, water, and communities and reduce methane pollution, which undermines natural gas’ role as a lower carbon alternative to coal and oil.  In addition, there must be a pathway for natural gas use to diminish over time and be replaced by lower emitting energy sources like wind and solar.  EDF is taking a leading role to ensure that natural gas provides real and sustained greenhouse gas benefits that facilitate, rather than constrain, the ongoing transformation to an energy system that is more efficient and powered by renewable resources.

Through an ambitious, multi-year project that utilizes groundbreaking science, policy, and industry engagement, EDF is taking a leading national role to ensure that natural gas provides real and sustained carbon benefits without harming the environment or the health of the communities where gas development occurs.
