The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) is an independent, non-profit organization founded to provide first-rate, unbiased research along with technical and scientific analysis to environmental regulators. The ICCT seeks a highly committed, self-motivated person to join us as a full-time Associate in the Aviation Program.  This position will support research to identify, refine, and promote policies to reduce the environmental impacts of commercial aviation. The work outputs of this position will be immediately applicable to ongoing policymaking at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and by the US Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). 

Position Responsibilities

  • Benchmarking and comparing the fuel efficiency of airlines using established ICCT methodologies;
  • Supporting the implementation of policies to reduce aviation emissions in the US, notably the implementation of ICAO recommended standards by FAA and EPA;  
  • Supporting research on the non-CO2 climate impact of commercial aircraft and associated mitigation options;
  • Synthesizing and presenting technical data into policy-relevant documents, memos, and working papers for both technical and non-technical audiences;
  • Engaging with external stakeholders including government officials, NGOs, academic experts or businesses to build trust and partnerships;
  • Organizing briefings, workshops, invite-only meetings and other outreach activities;
  • Contributing to funding identification and proposal development; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree in engineering, environmental science, energy and resources, or a transportation-related field or other relevant subject; or a Bachelor’s degree plus two to three years of related experience;
  • Significant modeling experience (e.g. emissions, dispersion, operations, etc.) or hands on familiarity with comparative benchmarking studies, along with the ability to manage and analyze large datasets;
  • Superior written and verbal communications skills, plus good interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent quantitative, analytical, and research skills combined with strategic problem-solving and great organizational skills;
  • Good working understanding of transportation engineering, aviation policy, and/or air quality issues;
  • Great facility with MS Excel, and good proficiency with MS Word and PowerPoint;
  • Familiarity with efficiency technology and emissions control for other modes is desirable.
  • International and/or extensive travel experience is preferred.

Position Details

The position will be located in either San Francisco, CA or Washington, DC, taking into account the applicant’s specific skill set and personal preferences. The ICCT offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience plus an excellent benefits package and a transportation subsidy.
