Description

Job Title: Program Assistant for Environmental Law Program, Beyond Coal Campaign Litigation                   

Reports To: Director of Environmental Law Program

Context: Provides administrative support for all aspects of the Environmental Law Program, with primary focus on research and administrative support for legal components of the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign.

Scope: The Law Program Assistant handles a range of administrative duties that advance the mission of the Environmental Law Program, with particular emphasis on research and administrative support for litigation supporting the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign. The Assistant provides support for major program categories: 1) research and data compilation relating to the compliance status of existing coal-fired power plants; 2) the litigation coordination program "new matter form" process and related database maintenance associated with legal actions against existing coal-fired power plants; 3) support functions such as billing, reimbursements, travel logistics and vendor contracting associated with legal actions against existing coal-fired power plants; 4) legal research library, web site and database maintenance associated with legal actions against existing coal-fired power plants; 5) document preparation, filing and basic fact research in support of courtroom litigation associated with legal actions against existing coal-fired power plants; 6) preparation and dissemination of educational materials and reports on law program activities associated with legal actions against existing coal-fired power plants for the media, grassroots and other audiences; and 7) administration of program fundraising.

JOB ACTIVITIES:

  1. Performs continuous research and maintenance and updating of data relating to existing coal-fired power plants, and associated law program and campaign web pages, and legal research library.
  2. Provides administrative support for the litigation coordination program associated with legal actions against existing coal-fired power plants, including support for the "new matter form" process, document preparation, copying, filing, faxing, and mailing. Maintains precise record keeping, law program computer database, and handles billings and record keeping. 
  3. Provides administrative support for the critical, precise tasks of courtroom litigation associated with legal actions against existing coal-fired power plants, including formatting and printing legal documents, communicating with court clerks, and filing and serving court papers properly. Performs limited factual and legal research tasks on computer legal databases (Lexis, Westlaw, or internet).
  4. Provides administrative support for the creation and dissemination of educational and promotional materials associated with legal actions against existing coal-fired power plants, for the public media, grassroots and other audiences.
  5. Performs a variety of administrative and clerical duties which include billing, reimbursements, travel logistics, copying, collating, faxing, filing, and mailing for all of the above. Performs ad hoc miscellaneous duties for the Environmental Law Program as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

-- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to perform multiple task and adhere to deadlines.

-- Computer skills: 1-2 years experience with word processing (Wordperfect and Word) and preferably database management skills also General computer literacy and solid internet research skills.

-- Solid writing, editing, and analytic skills.

-- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work well with volunteer membership, staff and the general public.

-- Ability to do precise, careful work needed for courtroom filings, attorney admissions and correspondence with courts, etc.

-- Ability to work well with a large number of diverse people, be flexible, takes the initiative and make decisions.

 

This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and John Muir Local.
