 Program Assistant with the New York Urban Program

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a global non-profit environmental organization with more than 1.2 million members and online activists.  We have offices in New York, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Beijing.  Our staff of over 350 includes lawyers, scientists, economists, and policy analysts who work to protect the environment and public health through advocacy and education.

Position Summary:

NRDC seeks a Program Assistant to support four senior attorneys in our New York office (the New York Urban Program Director and Deputy Director, the NYC Environment Director, and an Environmental Justice Attorney) as well as several other junior advocates/fellows working on New York regional issues. The position provides administrative support, requiring strong organizational skills, ability to juggle multiple tasks and willingness to work with a diverse and fast-paced team.  Specific duties and required skills are described below:

Essential Functions:

Providing administrative support to senior staff members in the Urban East Program

  • Proofreading, editing, researching, and preparing legal, scientific, and technical documents, reports, publications, fundraising proposals, etc.
  • Preparing expense reports, processing American Express reports
  • Maintaining paper and electronic filing systems and databases
  • Making travel arrangements, including transportation, hotel accommodations, vehicle rentals and conference registration
  • Handling phone calls and incoming and outgoing mail and faxes
  • Scheduling and organizing meetings for project staff
  • Organizing and participating in project conference calls
  • Assisting the receptionist and other program assistants as needed
  • Performing other research projects as assigned
Required Skills

Skills and Knowledge Requirements:

The successful candidate must have:

  • Experience in an administrative position;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work well with people of varying backgrounds in a team setting;
  • Strong problem solving and organizational skills to prioritize and carry out multiple tasks;
  • Follow institutional procedures, and perform undirected work with meticulous attention to detail; 
  • Ability to work accurately and with composure under deadline pressure; and
  • Superior proofreading skills and high degree of proficiency with spreadsheets, databases, the Internet, and electronic communication;
