Program & Outreach Associate
Clean Vehicles Program
Washington, DC Office

The Union of Concerned Scientists seeks an efficient, organized and energetic individual to provide a broad range of outreach, advocacy and administrative support for the Clean Vehicles program in Washington, DC.

Our nation’s oil use continues to present major challenges for our climate, our security, our economy and our health. The vast majority of our nation’s oil use goes to fuel our transportation system, which remains one of the most polluting sectors of the American and global economy.  Smog-forming, soot, and global warming emissions from our nation’s cars, trucks, buses, trains and planes are a threat to human health and the environment and that can and must, be addressed through a range of government, industry and consumer actions.  The UCS Clean Vehicles program is a recognized source for consumers, regulators, and policy makers alike to provide the fact-based, solution-oriented, innovative ideas that will help cut our nation’s oil use while transforming the transportation sector into a responsible partner in protecting our environment, health, and energy security.

Responsibilities
The Clean Vehicles Program and Outreach Associate will work as part of a team of experienced organizers, analysts, and lobbyists on a number of public outreach, issue and advocacy research, and program support efforts, including:

  • Outreach & Engagement: Including attending conferences of engineering and professional societies to recruit experts to our Science Network, organizing and leading training and engagement opportunities for these experts, and working to highlight their work through UCS online resources including the blog, webinars and other web content.
  • Administrative Support: Including drafting the Clean Vehicles portion of the intra-office newsletter, supporting hiring processes and new staff, responding to member inquiries, making travel arrangements, scheduling meetings and events, , and helping staff members meet financial and time-tracking deadlines.
  • Developing engagement opportunities and overseeing information dissemination to our supporters and allies: Including drafting and loading action alerts for our activist base of over 400,000 nationwide, and our network of over 20,000 scientific experts, as well as coalition partners.  Working with Communications staff to maintain and broaden the value and appeal of our online resources will be a key responsibility.
  • Tracking key industry and policy maker activity to help forward our transportation agenda.  Including online research of automakers, the fuels industry and other relevant policy actors.  This research will be conducted to support analytical and advocacy staff in the research, writing and dissemination of reports, fact-sheets, and analyses.
  • Assisting with policy-maker engagement.  Assisting the Clean Vehicles Washington Representative with coalition advocacy and lobbying work as needed, including attending coalition meetings, Congressional hearings, disseminating relevant information to Congressional and administration staff, as well as assisting in the coordination and participation in select meetings with decision-makers and staff.
  • Staff Management. The Program and Outreach Associate will be the direct manager of any summer or year-long Clean Vehicles Interns located in the Washington, DC office, helping to maximize the productivity of interns for the Clean Vehicles program.

Qualifications and experience
Strong personal relations skills, organizational abilities and good written and oral communication skills are needed. Familiarity with online action and social media tools a plus, but not required. Also needed are strong time-management skills, an ability to work both independently and in teams, and to interact professionally with individuals with a wide range of skills and responsibilities. This is a dynamic position, so a demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and multiple tasks is needed. A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required. Knowledge of transportation issues a plus.  A minimum of two years of relevant experience is required, preferably in a non-profit setting.

At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

Compensation, Hours and Location: This is a full-time position based in UCS’s Washington, DC office. For candidates who meet all position requirements, the salary is in the mid to high $30s. UCS offers excellent benefits and a rewarding work environment, and is an equal opportunity employer continually seeking to diversify its staff and to broaden opportunities for individuals from demographic groups that are historically underrepresented in the sciences and in environmental advocacy.
