Description
The Development Worker (DW) working as a Products Quality, Market Development and Environmental Advocacy Adviser will provide Environment Africa (EA) with technical assistance to build the knowledge and capacities of staff to develop, improve and increase market access and quality of products respectively. The principal focus will involve working with rural and urban farmers and communities in improving the quality of their products (e.g. honey, fresh and dried vegetables, dried fruit), and increase the markets for these products in order to improve their income generating capacities. S/he will support the further development of the Food Processing Centre in Hwedza and will be responsible for the establishment of similar centres where EA is actively involved in other community projects. In collaboration with the DW working on small scale agro-ecological production, this placement will assist in developing market linkages within Zimbabwe, the region and internationally, and will look at opportunities to enhance the products’ marketability through mechanisms such as organic and/or Fair Trade Certification, with an emphasis on export markets such as those to be found in Europe. Product quantity, quality, costs and package design for the market will be researched and developed in a cost effective manner that satisfies the export market and ultimately contributes to a sustainable programme. To contribute towards country and regional level policies on the environment and food security, the DW will work together with other Progressio DWs in Zimbabwe and in Malawi to research and publish on issues relating to externally driven mass production of bio-fuel crops e.g. Jatropha, and assess their implications for food security. The DW will also coordinate the process of documenting and publishing lessons from the project both in Malawi and in Zimbabwe to influence agricultural extension services.
