The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Based in New York City, with offices throughout the United States and worldwide, the Rainforest Alliance works with people whose livelihoods depend on the land, helping them transform the way they grow food, harvest wood and host travelers.

The Rainforest Alliance’s Initiative for Conservation in the Andean Amazon (ICAA)II Project works to conserve biodiversity and enhance livelihoods by supporting sustainable land management practices. The ICAAII Project is cross-cutting, involving the sustainable forestry, agriculture and tourism programs of the Rainforest Alliance. The project seeks to support the three broader objectives of the ICAA II program including: a) reduce rates of deforestation and biodiversity loss; b) enhance effective performance in key aspects of natural resource governance; and c) increased livelihood quality and sustainability. Rainforest Alliance has two distinct landscapes: Sucumbíos, Ecuador and Cusco/Madre de Dios, Peru.

Position Summary: 

The Productivity Associate, Coffee &Cocoa, will be responsible for providing technical support for the implementation of activities related to the agricultural component of the ICAA II Project. S/he will focus on issues of productivity and quality of coffee, cocoa or other crops to be defined in the landscape, within a framework of biodiversity conservation and sustainable livelihoods. Additionally, the Associate will train professionals, technicians and producers in implementing sustainable agricultural practices to facilitate the process of certification to achieve Rainforest Alliance certification for cocoa and coffee and verification of the climate module.

Responsibilities: 
  • Develop modules, tools and guidance materials about good agricultural practices to achieve increased productivity and quality, mainly in coffee and cocoa crops;
  • Identify and promote good agricultural practices at farm level;
  • Facilitate, promote and implement standards of the Sustainable Agricultural Network (SAN); 
  • Provide appropriate advice on practices and technologies to professionals, technicians and producers to increase productivity and quality on coffee and cocoa production;
  • Implement and track progress on the establishment of demonstrative plots with technologies and practices in accordance with SAN standards;
  • Promote partnerships with state and private organizations to integrate production in value chains or other schemes requesting costs and quality control, and enhancement of productivity;
  • Provide information on funding and markets opportunities;
  • Collaborate and advise organizations of producers of coffee and cocoa in the implementation of work plans;
  • Organize field visits for exchanges of experiences with successful coffee and cocoa producers in different regions of Peru;
  • Contribute with development of work plans and progress reports in accordance with established performance indicators approved by USAID;
  • Establish relationships with regional local agricultural policy makers in the region where the project is being implemented and participate in forums or policy dialogues to contribute to dissemination of sustainability of agricultural practices; and
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: 
  • University degree in Agricultural Engineering /related Natural Resources field required;
  • Minimum of 5 years field experience with sustainable agriculture, rural development, both at planning and implementation of activities level;
  • Minimum of 3 years field experience in productive and quality processes on coffee and cocoa;
  • Extensive knowledge of the standard of the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN), their implementation and procedures;  
  • Knowledge and experience in the process and benefits of Rainforest Alliance Certification and its implications for certified farmers, especially in coffee and cocoa crops;
  • Understanding of issues and challenges related to capacity building and adult education oriented to farmers beneficiaries;
  • Interpersonal skills to manage relationships with the private sector, producers and NGOs;
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and supervising  field staff;
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to work independently and in teams, assess priorities and multitask with attention to details, and;
  • Ability and willingness to travel 80 percent of the time.
Salary: 

Commensurate with experience.
