Ocean Associates, Inc. (OAI) is seeking a Principal Scientist to support the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Office of Protected Resources (OPR) to assist OPR in carrying out some of its required functions related to the conservation and recovery of marine mammals under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) and the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

Duties:  Assist OPR staff with specific tasks including:

  • Coordinating the OPR annual review of the Atlantic, Pacific and Alaska Scientific Review Groups that review NMFS’ Stock Assessment Reports;
  • Assist in the coordination of Regional Office and Science Centers in the development of agency strategies for maximizing collaboration and cooperation with marine mammal and sea turtle conservation and recovery activities with the NOAA Office of Law Enforcement;
  • Coordinating the development of agency-wide approach to the reconciliation/comparison of Distinct Population Segments  under the ESA and stocks under the MMPA; and
  • Supporting the development of agency-wide guidance for the designation and conservation of marine mammals as strategic under the MMPA.

The salary is $ 43.52 per hour. The contract is for full-time work, 40hrs/week beginning as soon as possible.  Excellent employee benefits are provided including paid medical insurance, and holiday, vacation and sick leave, and more. The work location will be at the OPR in Silver Spring MD.

Required minimum education, knowledge, and experience:

  • BS. in environmental / biological science.
  • Five (5) years of documented evidence of experience in marine mammal conservation and   management or a MS in environmental/biological science and 3 years of related experience. 
  • Knowledge of or background in implementation of MMPA and ESA.
