Summary of Department

The Sustainable Markets Group (SMG) drives IIED’s efforts to ensure that markets contribute to positive social, environmental, and economic outcomes.  We do this through policy research, advocacy and engagement. The group brings together IIED's work on Market Governance, Business Models, Tackling Market Failure, Sustainable Consumption and the Green Economy, Investment, Economics of Climate Change, and Energy.

The Environmental Economics team leads SMG’s work on the economics of sustainable development, examining the market failures that prevent transformation to an inclusive green economy, with a particular focus on economic incentive mechanisms such as payments for environmental services.

Summary of Role

The postholder will be responsible for taking forward and shaping IIED’s environmental economics agenda in the new five year strategy period, acting as IIED’s principal contact and spokesperson on environmental economics, managing the Environmental Economics Team and developing and leading a diverse programme of collaborative research and policy advocacy.

To succeed in this role you will have a postgraduate degree or equivalent in a relevant branch of economics and an excellent understanding of the key issues surrounding the economics of environment and development (and experience of working on these issues in Africa, Asia and/or Latin America), demonstrated through a record of relevant innovative and influential work and publications. Well networked you will have solid project management, research and leadership experience and a sustained track record in fundraising.
