Principal Policy Officer – Environment, Climate Change & Transport and Enterprise, Economy & Skills

We are looking for highly motivated people with enthusiasm, innovative ideas and the ability to work flexibly in a dynamic, quickly changing policy environment. London Councils has agreed a set of shared ambitions, focusing on political leadership, London Councils as a trusted partner, pan-London efforts that add value and championing innovation and leading practice.

Within the Environment, Climate Change and Transport team, you will help London boroughs respond to their environmental, climate change and transport challenges.  You will find solutions to some of the most challenging policy questions of the time and develop creative and collective approaches to varied issues such as emissions accounting, waste management and flooding. We will provide opportunities for you to shape service delivery approaches and leave your mark on the London policy landscape.

It is desirable for you to have experience of contributing to policy development in either or all of environment, climate change or transport policy areas.

Within the Enterprise, Economy and Skills Team, you will help London boroughs respond to skills shortages and ensure that Londoners have the skills they need to get a good job, progress in their career and future proof them against the impact of emerging technologies. You would lead our work on policy projects to help Londoners get the skills they need in key growth sectors, promote apprenticeships, support London’s cultural sector and create economic growth that benefits more disadvantaged Londoners.

It is desirable for you to have experience of contributing to policy development in either or all of employment, skills and/or culture policy areas.

Both roles will require that you analyse policy, research and data and apply this analysis to achieve better results for Londoners. You will also make London’s case to central government and a range of other critical partners in London’s public sector and beyond. This will require you to build effective relationships across sectors, communicate, negotiate, and influence a diverse range of stakeholders, as well as having experience of creative problem solving and managing a varied workload of projects in a pressurised environment.

London Councils is a collective of local government in London. We aim to get the best deal for Londoners and to ensure that London’s councils have the resources, freedoms and powers to do the best possible job for their residents and local businesses. We also run several services on behalf of the boroughs including the Freedom Pass, Taxicard and Health Emergency Badge.
