With Climate Change a strategic pillar of IFC s business, the Corporation has established a new department, the Climate Business Group (CBG), to provide leadership on climate change and leverage IFC s investment and advisory businesses to maximize impact. CBG is a centrally positioned product and investment group responsible for supporting, sourcing and executing investment transactions in projects that are climate change positive. CBG works closely with other industry investment groups within IFC, including Infrastructure, Manufacturing and Financial Markets, as well as with appropriate counterparts within the World Bank. The Renewable Energy Specialist plays a central role in this global team. The Opportunity As the demands and opportunities for IFC continue to grow rapidly in the climate change area, we are building a team of sectoral specialists who are strategic thinkers, with deep market knowledge and technical expertise in climate-relevant sectors, and whose private sector experience demonstrates impact and a record of delivering results. The successful candidates will provide strategic guidance, support innovation of new business models for climate change, support investment appraisals, and develop the knowledge management tools to catalyze scale-up of IFC s global climate change business.

Duties and Accountabilities:


The specialist will be called upon to:
  • Lead/Participate in the ongoing development and implementation of strategies for incorporating renewable energy in IFC s investment sectors, including: o Tracking market trends and regulatory frameworks; o Interact with a network of sector players including project developers, technology providers, industry experts and regulators.
  • Be familiar with all latest developments in the renewable energy sector including electricity generation, thermal and mechanical applications;
  • Support of investment and advisory transactions: o Originate new leads, opportunities and transactions based on network of contacts in the sector; o Act as an in-house advisor to investment staff in appraising new private sector proposals for investments in the renewable energy power generation, heating. cooling sector of emerging economies; o Liaise with client s technical staff, project engineers and co-investors /lenders engineers; o Provide input as needed on project capital and O&M costs; o Provide guidance from a sectoral perspective on Advisory services work relating to regulatory interventions, market and client capacity building work; o Assist staff engineers with developing key operational and capital assumptions for incorporation in models; o In consultation with other specialists in the renewable energy area, provide input into the supervision of IFC s portfolio of renewable energy sector investments, including field inspection as necessary and assist in resolving operational weaknesses.
  • Program and consultant Management: o In consultation with Investment Managers, hire and supervise specialized technical specialists as necessary; o Supervise Consultants and consulting firms to conduct market studies, project related studies, etc.
  • Knowledge Management and dissemination: o Support the development of content of IFC s knowledge platforms and to disseminate the same within IFC and with external clients.
  • Selection Criteria:


  • Position requires sound business judgment to identify the strengths and weaknesses of projects and to provide precise evaluation of technical, commercial, environmental and managerial issues;
  • At least fifteen years or more experience in the power and/or renewable energy industry covering a broad range of responsibilities within the industry in several of the following areas: solar (PV and/or CSP), wind (utility scale and/or small-scale), biomass (combustion, anerobic digestion, pyrolysis, gasification & biofuels)), geothermal (medium temperature utilization and/or hydrothermal power generation), hydroelectric (small, medium and large run-of-river) and other cutting edge renewable energy generation technologies (eg wave & tidal), renewable energy heating and cooling systems, distributed off grid energy schemes, energy efficiency planning, market and competitive analysis, tariff regimes, commercial operations, and environmental compliance;
  • Up-to-date knowledge of capital costs and operation and maintenance cost parameters of diverse generation technologies;
  • Have an extensive network of contacts at a senior level covering key sector players, technology experts, regulators etc in developing and developed markets;
  • Experience in emerging economies;
  • Professional engineer or environmental specialist with advanced degree or degrees (business background or MBA also helpful);
  • Excellent communication skills in both oral and written English; additional languages skills (Mandarin, Spanish, French) are an advantage;
