The Ecology Consultancy (TEC) is one of the UK’s largest ecological consultancies. It was established in 1999 and has grown to circa 60 permanent full time staff with a turnover circa £4m. It has developed a sound reputation for delivering objective, high quality work to clients in the private, public and voluntary sectors. Along with its sister environmental consultancy Temple, it forms part of (and is wholly owned by) Temple Group. It is now entering its next exciting phase with ambitious plans for further growth over the next five years in line with Group’s 2020 vision.

In addition to its London HQ the company has offices in East Sussex, Norfolk and Scotland all of which are led by regional managers and supported by Technical Directors and a centralised business support and accounts team. TEC also works closely with the Green Infrastructure Consultancy and has a minority holding in the same.

The success and growth of the company, has seen our technical and geographical portfolio increase greatly. We wish to capitalise on this success and build on our ambition by expanding into the West Midlands. This will include recruiting professional and highly competent ecologists to complement our existing team.

We are looking to appoint a Principal Ecologist to initiate and head up our West Midlands office. The Principal Ecologist will be involved in all areas of our work but primarily will be responsible for establishing our new office and developing our business in the West Midlands and beyond.

Main Areas Of Responsibility

You will be expected to manage staff and individual contracts in order to deliver high quality ecological consultancy services within budget and to meet deadlines. You will also be involved in costing work preparing tenders and business development. This may involve, liaising with clients, other consultants and consultees; acquiring data from third parties; recruiting and supervising TEC staff and sub-contractors; undertaking field work, preparing maps and writing and editing reports. Duties will include:

  • Identifying a suitable location for a West Midlands office, recruiting appropriate staff to that office in order to effectively develop TEC services, and ensuring the office is adequately equipped and provided for;
  • Developing business for The Ecology Consultancy in the West Midlands and beyond;
  • Ensuring any business generated, including that generated by other TEC offices, is managed to ensure client satisfaction and expected financial return;
  • Monitoring and managing the West Midland office’s finances, with support from the Finance Director;
  • Managing the West Midlands office and assisting in the management of the company overall, in co-operation with other staff and in particular the Technical Director (Regions);
  • Project Managing what is envisaged to be a wide and varied workload and supervising field staff undertaking, amongst other things, protected species surveys and assessments, Phase 1 habitat surveys, and Ecological Clerk of Works and Watching Brief roles on construction contracts;
  • Undertaking survey work as and when necessary and appropriate;
  • Managing individual contracts, in order to deliver high quality ecological consultancy services within budget and to meet deadlines. This will involve: liaising with clients, other consultants and consultees; acquiring data from third parties; organising and supervising sub-contractors and other Ecology Consultancy staff; preparing maps and writing and editing reports;
  • Managing Quality Assurance, including, but not limited to, attention to detail and accuracy, delivery of contracts on time and within budget, and improving the quality of work produced by those you manage;
  • Developing excellent relationships with clients and attending meetings with clients and design teams when necessary;
  • Developing new business and work streams for the company based on your own particular skills and contacts;
  • Contributing to the marketing and business development of the company and delivering Continual Professional Development sessions (CPD) to existing and potential clients; and
  • Contributing to training courses offered both internally and externally

Contracted Working Hours

40 hours per week / 8 hours, Monday to Friday (worked between 0800 – 1800).  Please note at Principal Ecologust level there should be a willingness for flexible working with availability and occasional meetings outside normal working hours.
