Pride Program Manager, Micronesia
Location: Micronesia (Palau/Pohnpei/Guam) Length: Initial 30 month contract with potential to become permanent position Reports to: Cohort Director Travel: Average about 40%, some months may be much higher, primarily but not exclusively in Micronesia/Pacific. Salary: Competitive salary and benefits (benchmarked against major international NGOs working in Micronesia). Start date: February/March 2012 Based on a strong partnership and working relationship between Rare and the Micronesian Conservation Trust (MCT), our “Program for Island Resilience in Micronesia” will deploy Rare’s experience running social marketing and conservation campaigns combined with MCT’s local expertise and knowledge to address key threats to Micronesian reef systems in approximately 11 Micronesian sites. This program is being implemented under the framework of the Micronesia Challenge (MC), through which the region’s leaders have publicly committed and are holding themselves accountable to protecting 20% of terrestrial and 30% of near shore marine waters by 2015. The Position
The Pride Program Manager (PPM) provides comprehensive instruction, mentoring, and strategic support to the program participants throughout the two-year conservation campaigns, the PPM manages relationships with local partners, ensuring that Rare’s priorities of capacity building, constituency building, and conservation are met. As a PPM, you will conduct week-long site visits for personalized support to Pride programs and complete trip reports. You will manage and communicate activities and progress, towards final outcomes of each program using RarePlanet (an internet-based project management tool and social networking portal) to facilitate communications and collaboration between Campaign Managers around the world. The ideal candidate has bilingual and bi-literate skills in at least one Micronesia language and English as well as academic and/or practical experience in marine, terrestrial/watershed conservation and/or social marketing. S/he has an ability to mentor and oversee 3-4 projects across the region working to strengthen community ownership in natural resource management through improved MPA management, watershed management, best erosion control practices, and social marketing. S/he possesses successful team and partner support/mentoring track record, a deep commitment to community-based conservation of biodiversity, and will have had proven success managing projects and meeting strict deadlines involving multiple stakeholders. S/he will have strong project management skills, history of proactive leadership, successful relationship management skills, consultative and results oriented.
Required Qualifications
- Five plus (5+) years of professional experience in conservation or social marketing or communications fields.
- A strong understanding of conservation, marine governance frameworks, environment and/or biodiversity issues especially those related to community engagement and community based conservation.
- Proven expertise in project planning, project management, and management skills
- Must have demonstrable teaching, training, or coaching experience and proven success in being able to thrive in team environments.
- Enjoys working with people and have a strong understanding of cultural differences, and have built and managed long-distance partnerships.
- Demonstrated ability to influence and manage others even without direct supervisory function.
- Experience in solving problems on the spot and apply conflict resolution and negotiation techniques to get results.
- Knowledge in leading community mobilization, changing people's behavior, and experience or understanding of Pride Campaigns.
- Fluency in English and preferably at least one Micronesian language – both written and oral.
- A desire to travel locally based on needs of the position (up to 50% at peak times).
- Proficiency in using MS Office suite, databases, graphics and learning multimedia software.
- The ability to self-manage and to adjust to competing priorities and allocate time as necessary to get the job done.
- A Master’s Degree (desired), or a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (required) in the fields of marine/biodiversity conservation, communications, community outreach or social marketing, communications, community outreach or social marketing.
