  DEPARTMENT OR PROGRAM SPECIFIC
  The Nature Conservancy’s Flat Ranch is a working ranch in Island Park, Idaho.  Located within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the ranch is the hub for a community-based conservation effort focused on restoring and protecting the biodiversity values of the Upper Henry’s Fork region.  A visitor center on the ranch is used to facilitate the education of the local community and visitors about the ecological, biological, and cultural importance of the area.
  ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  The Preserve Manager is responsible for managing the day to day operations and maintenance of the ranch and visitor center, and for developing an educational program that includes educational field trips, speaker series and educational tools including displays, slide shows and special events. The Preserve Manager will also implement stewardship management plans which may include ecological monitoring and research, invasive species control, habitat restoration, facilities maintenance, trail and equipment maintenance, easement monitoring, field trips and volunteer coordination.  Work will be specific to TNC preserves or easements.  The Preserve Manager will work with lessees and other staff to oversee implementation of livestock management, grazing plans, and agricultural leases for various preserves and properties. The majority of the manager’s time will be spent working in the field, directing volunteers and interns, as well as interacting with the public but will also be responsible for managing the daily operations of the Flat Ranch Visitor Center including tracking of all merchandise orders and sales, donations, and all other accounting and record keeping in cooperation with the Finance and Fundraising staff at the Idaho Field office. The center will be open to the public for a minimum of 54 hrs per week understanding that this person is not expected to work all those hours.
  BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field and minimum one year related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Degree not required but preferred.
• Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.  Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required to complete preserve management activities.
• Knowledge of ecological land management principles
• Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation
• Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s)
• Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results
• Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers). 
• Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English
• Safe use of maintenance tools; including lawn mowers, power tools and construction tools
  ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
  COMPLEXITY/PROBLEM SOLVING:
• Coordinates multiple projects with several variables, setting realistic deadlines and managing timeframes
• Interprets guidelines, evaluates information, and modifies processes to adapt to changing circumstances
• Compiles data, resolves disparities and modifies processes to generate plans
• Resolves routine issues independently, consulting with supervisor to develop plans for resolution of complex and unusual problems
• Cultivates and develops creative ideas to improve conservation strategies
• Applies diversified knowledge of scientific principles and practices to a variety of assignments

DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING:
• Makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience and judgment
• Perform under minimal and frequently distant supervision, consulting with supervisor in event of any unusual circumstance, problem or question that falls outside of general preserve management realm.

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT – FINANCIAL AND SUPERVISORY:
• Supervise volunteers and interns with responsibility for training and performance management.
• Will lead and monitor work groups consisting of staff, interns, and volunteers covering a wide geographic area
• Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete projects and negotiating and contracting with vendors.

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
• Networks with diverse groups, including land owners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to recruit support for the Conservancy and publicize Conservancy efforts
• Provide a variety of information to staff and others, contributing to conservation projects and assisting workflow throughout the organization.
• Work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people, including scientists, educational speaker series guests, preserve staff and others, providing and obtaining needed information
• Interacts with preserve visitors, conveys basic preserve information and leads field trips

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Preserve manager may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions:
• require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
• present frequent possibility of injury
• require long hours in isolated settings
